Leopard OS X
on: February 24, 2008, 10:40:57 AM
I have seen the specs for running the Leopard OS X on the Apple site and it says only on a Mac or Macbook.

Is it possible to be run on normal laptops (eg. Dell Inspiron 6400 - my one) without having to buy a new laptop and just buy the software from the shop?

You can run it as an emulator but basically to run like an os - no
Its designed with the hardware of the macs in mind and its an enclosed system basically.

Its a shame really.

If Id want it, that means another £500 - £1000 laptop with it on. :(

Just wondered really because I aint very happy with Vista and Leopard OS X looks well good compared to Vista.

Sell your existing laptop and get a Mac :D

you wont regret it ;)

Seriously Leopard is an amazing operating system. If it wasnt for the fact that Ive just got a new work laptop then I would have bought one.

Unfortunately my G3 iBook isnt supported by Leopard, looking at getting a Mini Mac thou :)

The problem is that my laptop is a Dell and I paying for it monthly until 2009 i think.

What I do? Just sell it still?

I know, can I ask you lot a favour by keeping an eye out for any good deals on MacBooks (preferably with Leopard OS X on) and PM me when you find any, or if anyone has one and is going to sell it, let me know too. :)

Cheers

It can actually be done:

But if you read up it does not work very well and not exactly legal :)

perfectly legal if you have a valid licence for it. Doesnt even require dodgy images anymore.

And works absolutely fine, even out performs a macbook pro in some bench mark tests.

Not on equal machines becuase that would not work, I read the tests and said it performs well but not as good and macbooks run vista better (note got a mac but not a fanboy)

I thought Leopard was a step backwards tbh.  Its the first of the OSX series thats felt really flaky.  The others are spot on though.  System restore/time machines pretty awesome tho when you do trash something.

Never used the other versions like steveF is so I can not comment on that

I like it, I prefer many aspects to it compared to xp on my notebook(more on that wording in a sec)
I like the quick access and some of the security features and the software you get with the package as a whole compared to what you have on windows but there are annoying things like not remembering a sort order of a folder when new things are added or not auto aligning which can lead to a bit of a mess.
The full size and minimize I do not like but thumbnail size feature for icons is nice, the list style folder view is good and I like the menu
You basically have to try and use it to know if you like it or not
I really like it and the macbook pro as a package, I do not think it would work or feel as good on a pc based notebook becuase the touchpad and the hardware are utilised by the software but I would not and could not use it on my main computer and prefer xp to anything at the moment for long term and every day use on a computer.

There have been some big changes under the hood of leopard. Although Id still say its alot stable than the earlier versions.

Tiger had its issues when it came out as well - but apple fixed those, as Im sure they will with Leopard.

Yeah dont get me wrong Leopard has some damn clever things under the hood but they dont work properly yet.  I got very used to OSX never crashing/locking up over recent years.  It does happen occasionally with Leopard but sure theyll fix them.

Its still a fraction of the times my windows boxes die.  I just got used to it never breaking.
