Which Laptop? ~£400
on: July 10, 2008, 23:28:49 PM
Hewlett Packard Pavilion GZ974EA

Acer Aspire 5920

Looking for a Laptop around £400. These are the two that are interesting me. Anyone got any thoughts on them?

My brother also mentioned awhile ago he got some money off a dell laptop when he phoned up them up. Would you recommend one of the Dell XPS?

Thanks

The HP looks to be the same machine as the G6032EA, which Im typing on at the moment.  The 6032 or whatever is the current model however is less than that at staples.

Edit :: The present model appears to be the G6092, and its more powerful for £399 inc vat.

What are you actually looking for in the laptop?

Im getting a HP 2133 shortly with memory upgrade and 6 cell battery.  Fantastic bit of kit.

Long term contracts. PCworld could hike the prices and youd either have to buy the laptop or stick with the deal.

thought about a "free" one?

All Celeron or Atom unless you pay extra anyway, so no difference in speed according to the reviews ive read (If the atom really is that poor a performer I cant see the point to it at all).  Tomorrow I think CPW will be rolling out the Elonex OneTWO.  IIRC thats using the new VIA CPU, 80Gb hard disk and a 10" screen.  "250 with XP, and £219 with Ubuntu in a few weeks.  We have a pre-production version at work at the moment, and other than the small screen its a nice little machine.  THough there was some word that they may Atom it instead.  Which again according to what ive read seems odd if the new VIA CPU is actually as good a performer as it appears.

they wouldnt be able to do that as they would be in breach of contract. You would have the right to terminate the contract & keep the laptop.

The Website price is + VAT.  Check your local one, see if they have any in stock.  I like mine, plays UT 2k4 with medium settings and no issues.

Edit, also if you want me to pull all my XP drivers off ill run up a driverpack for download if you chose to XP it.

Not a problem.  I had issues with the right nVidia and Beoadcom drivers.  Mine only has the Tk-53 1.7 in it, i think the 6092 has the 1.9 not the 1.6 as stated.  Faster than mine slightly :)
