Is it worth subscribing to last.fm?
on: April 20, 2008, 23:29:54 PM
Ive been using it for about 10 days or so, and Im very very impressed. Almost as much as I once was with Download Acelerator Plus (one of the few programs Ive ever bought online).

Ideally Id like to be able to listen to/control the stream via Winamp. I havent even bothered looking at what benefits subscribing provides as Im too tired to read a load of blurb, so Id prefer some genuine opinions.

Will subscribing stop the no more music on this station type message? Any other good things?

So you cant be bothered to read it for yourself? Go and have a look, theres no point in us telling you when you can read it yourself.

You can subscribe?

heh. I just leave it as a tool to see what I listen to most, and see what is most like what I like. Works well!

I just discovered Last.FM, Im liking it so far, but I cant seem to find a list of the benefits of subscribing. Ive found a couple of features which dont work because Im not a subscriber, but does anyone know or have a link to a list of the full benefits?

Indeed, was one of the reasons I asked, couldnt find an immediate and simple list of benfits.

If it doesnt cost you anything then think about it. Mostly it seems that it will give them some details as to who you are and enable them to tell your preferences easier so they can push you music that you might prefer.

there are two levels of membership, free and pay for.

free membership is like serious said, and seems pretty good, although Ive only been using it since Saturday so its recommendations havent had time to learn what I like yet.

The paid for membership enables some other features, so far Ive stumbled across:

discovery mode is subscription only (plays only music youve not played before which is similar to stuff you like)

subscription reduces the minimum time between plays of the same artist

But there doesnt seem to be a simple list of the benefits of giving them money. Surprisingly, I am somewhat reluctant to do so without knowing what they are offering in exchange.

I dont know how your project worked, but their method of deciding two artists are "similar" is distinctly flawed. They base similarity on the idea that if lots of people like the same two bands then they will be similar music.

Alas this falls flat on its face for a number of artists I like, eg

Jon Lords solo music is very classical influenced, while his band work is mainly with Deep Purple and Whitesnake. Since a lot of DP fans also like Jons classical work because he applies what can only be described as 1337 keyboard skilz0r, Deep Purple and Jon Lord classical music are considered by Last.fm to be similar. They arent.

I dont know anything like enough about the available technology to offer a better solution than they use, but there is deffinite room for improvement.

That said, on the whole it works quite well, its just where there are bizzare connections between artists that it falls down.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.
