the password is in the bios not the HDD, Ive tried a couple of different HDDs.

Crap, :(  a lot of trial and error of passwords ?  A bitch with a laptop but u could open and lock for jmps to do a hard reset.

Is it a Latitude ?

Have u tried Hirens boot CD ?

Download something called the dst-cd and boot your laptop with it. then change or remove the service tag. Might work.

Hope this is of some help. Power on passwords almost always are reset by the battery removal method.

The laptop doesnt get to the boot menu so I cant use a boot disk on it.

In that case its almost entirely down to resetting the password by the battery removal method.

Its already been said that removing the battery wont work, the password is in its own chip on the motherboard.
A quick google says you have to strip it down, and short the chip out, should be a few hours of fun, and hope it works when you put it back together.

Depends on specific laptop, IIRC the chip has a capacitor/battery in and you drain it.

I can get it to run in a console but I need the 5 letter service tag :)



my service tag has more than 5 letters and a combination of numbers.

Ive just been trying the shorting method but that isnt working either.
