You dont need a passport to travel between EU countries within continental Europe - you do need one to get back into the UK.

You just need photographic ID. A full UK Driving licence suffices.

I know as some of the lads who I went away on a stag weekend to Benidorm only took their drivers licences. UK Customs check on the way back and no problem at all.

not true - you still need a passport for the UK

Then either customs were retarded on the day we went through, or you dont.

You need a passport for the UK as we didnt sign up to the Schengen agreement. You dont need a passport when youre within europe.

My girlfriends sister just came back from Slovakia, and just used her ID to get in to the UK.

my mate managed it without a passport or ID and Ive managed it with an out of date passport

youre not supposed to though

for the UK/Ireland youre supposed to have a passport - once youre in an EU country that has signed up to the Schengen agreement you no longer need a passport

According to Wiki we have signed up to some aspects of it and there is a prime line in one of the paragraphs. That a visitor must show a reason for traveling and returning home to their originating country, and must be able to prove themselves a resident of their originating country.

The UK passport website says you need a passport - ergo you need a passport:

Quote
Although the United Kingdom is part of the European Union (EU), you still need to carry a full British 10-year passport (or five-year child passport if you are under 16 and not on a parent’s passport) every time you travel to Europe. This includes day trips and travel by Eurostar.

Many countries no longer check passports at their land borders, but they still expect visitors to be able to produce a valid form of identification. For UK travellers this is the British passport. Remember, your passport will have to be checked at immigration control when you return to the UK.

Indeed you need a passport, I looked into this before when I went to Prague (Couldnt find my passport till last minute)

In fact that reminds me, where is my passport, I havent seen it in a few months. Better take a look when I get back to the flat and it has my visa in it :(

I think you can still get same day service for passports in London, Euston station has a place if i remember correctly
