3D Scanning
on: March 24, 2016, 14:30:47 PM
Recently been looking at making a new project based off an old piece of equipment and was thinking of the best way of getting an exact replica of the casing.

3D scanning interests but buying one isn't feasible, anyone have any idea of cost for this or another way of getting the replica?

agggges ago I saw it being done with a little turn table, android phone and a lazer pointer

turn table turned the object

lazer pointer shon across it (at an angle, so it made a bit of a line)

android phone recorded it with camra

I think you might have had to stick a few little stickers or something on it ?

onice it was done you uploaded to pc and it gave you a 3d model

actually, there's an app which does it from photos, take lots of photos from different angles and then it makes a 3d model for you!

I *think* this is the one I used   http://www.123dapp.com/catch

was a bit naff when I tried it, but it was brand new then and I didn't really try hard

That looks interesting. I take it you'll have to pay to get a usable model to 3D print from, might give it a go though.

Any prices I've seen mentioned for scanning services was very high, much too much for what I want to do

What was it you wanted to scan?

The project I am working on currently uses 3 different White light 3d scanners to get models of the beaks of all known species of birds. Depending on what it is that you need to scan I could try and wrangle doing it on a lunch break.

As a shameless plug, the project also is doing a bit of citizen science, so you can help "process" the models into a format that we can use to look at bird evolution using the beaks: www.markmybird.org (more about the team and project here: http://macroevolution.group.shef.ac.uk/)

An interesting idea just popped into my head because of this thread...we're struggling to get members of the public to actually engage in the project, as it is a bit involved. Maybe we can offer scanning services in return for people doing x number of beaks....
