Should I sell my Volvo

Ok, lets get one thing straight, I hate public transport, with a passion. That might make me sound like a snob, but I dont care I just dont like busses and metros. Smelly, noisy, slow, smelly kids, makes me want to vomit some times.

To get to work on the bus, from my mams Min 1hr 30 mins max 2hrs 30 mins
Its only 12miles to work from my mams!

To get to work from my dads, about an hour. Both Journeys are not door to door and require 2 busses and walking in between.

To drive to work, through rush hour traffic Im looking at max 45 mins, on my bike I have actually done it in 60 mins, give or take, but 12 mile bike rides do kill me! Not that fit yet.

You see... I want to save up for a house and if I had no car then itd speed my saving up by quite a bit. Should I just get a new bike and then use that to get to work? But its not going to be very nice in the winter, which is just around the corner!

Or... Should I keep my car and just cycle to work maybe 3 days out of 5 then Id save money on petrol, get fit and erm, save money.

Opinions?

Could get a super-cheap to run car as a half and half solution.

A SMART car for example, no road tax, very cheap insurance and 100mpg. Cheap as chips (after the initial outlay) ... you do have to drive a smart car though.

mmm, if you sold it and used busses instead... would you keep using them ?

If I were you Id be sick after a week and back looking for a car !

is it worth much ? and does it cost much to run ?

could always sell it for something cheaper ?

It would probably not be sensible to sell due to its value. It may also be difficult to sell.

Taking an hour to cycle 12 miles is ridiculous, should take thirty at most, give it some welly! :P

I hate Public Transport just as much as everyone else lol, i have to get 2*** (Thanks Serious lol!) buses to where i work everyday and it takes me an 1hr 15 mins there and in the afternoon when i finish at 3 ish i dont get home till 5 because the bus where i live only runs every hour its stupid. Also where i work is only a 10 minute drive away by car its a nightmare, I really cannot wait till i pass my driving test.

A pushbike for communting is crap cos of puntures, thiefing gits, the weather, drivers, turning up at work looking like a poor sweaty hippy tit.

Buses are crap cos theyre buses.

Cars are crap cos they expensive to run but if you look after it youll get you to work warm, dry and on time 999/1000 times.

Im in the same boat saving up for stuff, I gave up clubbing and only go to the pub once a week so I can keep my car. Everytime I dont go clubbing Im like yey, £100 saved! Aint been in months.

A SMART is a little extreme imo, Id go for a little clio or sommink so you dont look like a idiot.

It shouldnt be taking you anywhere near those time scales to cross Newcastle...  Its a tiny city.

You should just use the metro system.  Busses are frankly horrible and Id rather shoot myself in the ear than ride one given a choice but the metros just like travelling by train and nothing like the London underground as its far cleaner, less cramped and better ventilated.

catching 23 busses in an hour and fifteen minutes is a miracle, it often takes twenty minutes or more for a bus to arrive around here, add travelling time ... You cant be going very far on each bus :?  :mrgreen:

My car aint worth much at all.

I cant really cycle, as itd kill me I just did a route planning thing with google maps and it says it should take 6.5 miles from my dads, but requires me going over the water into gateshead and heading back, thats just insane, it obviously doesnt understand traffic.

Anyway, My car aint worth a lot of money, itd cost more getting new insurance and probably finding a whole load of new problems with a new car.

Ive decided to cycle to work 2 or 3 days out of every week, this way Ill get fit and Ill save money on petrol/gas mainly.

I worked out a plan today to save money and get control, once and for all of my finances, as they had me doing the most mind numbing job EVER! seeing if several thousand files in a filing cabinet were in order, from about 18,000 through to 23,000! GOD I was brain dead by the end of the day. But my contract ends in 4 months :D

Newcastle buses arent as bad as some other places, most of them are OK. Metro is usually great tho.

agreed - Newcastle busses are better than many but still not something I do if I have a choice.  And usually walking is easier in such a small place.

The metro is one of the best public transport systems around tbh.  Fast, efficient, clean and with capacity to spare.  Doesnt really fall in the same league as busses
