Local history

Just been doing a bit of googling about the history of the area I moved to a couple of months back.

My local pub is apparently the location where Thomas Pain wrote Rights of Man. (Tis random to think I was just sitting there not so long ago to watch the football)

Another pub is the location where Lenin planned the russian revolution.

George Orwell used to live in the area & apparently based the depressed setting of 1984 on his run-down surroundings

Tony Blair also lived there    - apparently Blair & Brown had a meeting in a local restaraunt on upper street where they decided who was going to be prime minister & who was going to be chancellor.

Also the home of nick hornby - both high fidelity & about a boy are set in islington.

& lastly in the hitch hikers guide to the galaxy arthur dent meets trillian at a house party in islington!

Apparently it is also the most socially diverse area in the UK - 55% council housing.

do a search for the history of your local area/local pubs - tis strange what comes up.

or visit your local library and ask for local history books, many have sections specifically directed at local history ;)

Yeah its a shame that my estate is rather new, but has some major history in surrounding areas.... I mean this place may be one of the biggest housing estates in europe but its one of the most boring as well :(
