5p carrier bags

 :roll: yeah, this will solve all our problems.

It's not like 99.99% of what goes in our bin is all the packaging from supermarket apples or anything.

at least you don't pay for paper bags.
In Wales, if you go for a fast food burger - they will ask if you want a bag.
If you do, then your chips & burger are placed in a bag & handed to you.
You are charged 5p


If you say no, your chips are placed in the same size bag & your burger handed to you seperate.


Bureaucracy at its best.


What you will find with the bags are
i) the 5p bags are not really reusable, they are thin & will hardly carry any weight before breaking
ii) this means you buy the more expensive bag for life
iii) you get annoyed with yourself you forgot your bags & end up doing no ii
So its not 5p, its 10p


Personally I just bought them 50p canvas bags that are sold in the supermarkets. They last for years!

1p, 2p, 5p don't really care, i just use them as bin bags for my mini bin.

I dont mind the idea, it would be much better if we used fewer bags.

Whats ridiculous is that Tesco and Sainsburys have both upgraded their normal bags to thicker sturdier bags, so even if fewer are used, just as much plastic goes to landfill.

Also the funds dont go to cleaning up the plastic, nor to making them biodegradable or recyclable, it goes to an unrelated charity.

Nothing has been solved.

The charge only applies to shops or chains with 250 or more full-time workers. There are also some other exceptions.

So any smaller shops charging it doesn't apply.

Shops collecting the 5p per bag are expected to donate it to 'good causes' except they aren't required to by law.

Some people are getting around the tax by 'borrowing' baskets or trolleys. In at least one location baskets are being security tagged...

My local Londis is charging for them and they are a franchise with about 10 employees max.  :muttley:

I'd also like to point out i am f*cking fed up with being told that bags are now 5p, every f*cking time i go into a shop or a supermarket, do not they not understand that after a couple of weeks everyone should know there is now a 5p charge.

On top of this, why am i being asked what my views are on the subject by a till operator, i don't f*cking care its only 5p you tight git.  :rofl:

I did the self checkout today and you have go press for how many bags you use which is fine except none of the checkouts had any bags. I like to get s carrier, even if I'm only buying two things I wanna bag to carry it in that I can use as a rubbish bag later.

I saw this yesterday complete waste of time, the option to input how many bags you want and no carriers within eyeshot.

This is the sh*t we will have to put up with now isn't it.

Actually, I find it amazing how much of a difference it has made. I mean, 5p...it's nothing...yet walking around supermarkets now you find most people with their own bags. Tesco and Sainsbury offering the "green" points for your own bags didn't work...but hey, woah, 5p for a bag? No thanks I'll bring my own.

There's still the issue of packaging waste, but one (tiny) step at a time.

Its all a big con, the 5p carriers are much better quality.

I still go shopping everyday without carrier bags, i don't want to walk around with empty carriers in my pockets like i'm a stig..
