Job decisions...
on: March 08, 2011, 19:44:49 PM
Im really stuck on what to do here so thought i would get some opinions from the tekforums.. hehe

Basically i was working at company A, applied for a job at company B through an agency, B offered me a job.

I told company A, while waiting for a reaction I accepted at company B
Company A then made an offer, I was to think about this, they then increased to match what I had asked for, so i told them I would stay and mailed the agency reversing my decision to accept the job at B.

I got a call from the agency today, basically trying to talk me into accepting, they had some good points.

So whatever I do now, someone is getting disappointed.

Company A, been there over a year, counter offered 26k and will schedule some training later in the year (no definite times yet). Commute is 3.5 miles each way. Job is remote support engineer for a wide range of technologies from desktop to infrastructure, but its solely break fix support.

Company B, offered 27k start, 28.5k after 6 months and a VCP within 4months, commute is 40miles each way, job is support engineering/junior consultant for VDI, hosted services, vmware, citrix, no real desktop stuff (which is nice), looks like good progression and increases in salary with this route.

What would people do?

Company A sounds like they are struggling to keep you on board and flinging in last minute incentives, company B sounds much better paid and geared towards long term career progression. I'd be saying goodbye to company A.

I agree company B seems to be a lot better for progression, even if realistically you will be taking a pay cut (1k - Tax - Fuel) even at 2.5k I expect it will be a cut if you are doing 400 miles a week.

You could always push them for a little more money, so actually cover petrol costs, they obviously both want you!

All things considered I'd still go for B

theres no career progression in breakfix without a proper training & qualification path...
Go for company B if what they are offering is set in your contract. Ive been to places where they promise training & none ever materialise.

Ive done field/breakfix for the best part of 15years - most of my qualifications are now worthless as its old technology.
I was told a year ago to get out of breakfix & start again by an IT Manager ive known for 10 years or so... He said that he never gives
vacancies to people with a breakfix background, because he believes that they wont settle into an office enviroment.

40 miles is a lot to commute though.. you should try a dummy run before deciding to see how long it takes. It could add 3 hours to your working day.
So that with the added fuel/running cost its costing you 10 times more to get to work.

Also be careful about training - sometimes a company can have you over a barrel in regards to paying back the training if you leave, etc.

Job B.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I would go JobB but do my best to keep JobA sweet and leave amicably so that if you ever need a job they would have you back.

Cheers for the input

Im a little worried about how work will react after i put them through negotiating, effectively accepted then turn round and say i want to leave anyway.

Job B sounds better for long term indeed, i was on 20k before this all kicked off so anything is better than before, extra hours travelling dont bother me since i'll be getting out of shifts and on call with the new job. Im worried about the £4 per litre fuel costs im hearing about at the moment as well.

is there an oncall allowance or is that factored into your base salary? You might want to ask about that.  My old job paid £2.50 an hour oncall + overtime rates if you got called out...
As for the fuel... your money goes up after a few months anyway - you might be worth asking the recruiter.. maybe even squeeze an extra £500 or something.

Obviously you buy a diesel & run it on bio :oD
