Office/Desk Chairs
on: August 11, 2011, 18:31:01 PM
I'm in the market for a new chair, and this being tekforums I imagine some of you spend quite a lot of time in your chairs, and know what's good and what's sh*te.

So basically i'm looking for a new chair that's comfy and won't break. I've managed to break 3 chairs within 24 hours of owning them so I'm a bit wary of £30 office chairs, but on the other hand I know that paying £100 for one doesn't necessarily mean it'll be any good. Frankly the current chair i'm using, while sturdy, is the most uncomfortable f**king chair i've ever sat on. Comfort is very important as i've currently got a slipped disc and as you can imagine it can be quite painful when sitting in an uncomfortable chairs.

So basically, if any of you have an office chair that you own or you've used at work that you can recommend, I'd like to hear from you!

The only chair I've ever found perfectly comfortable are the ones that seem to be standard around IT in London, Herman Miller Aeron chairs, unfortunately they're ridiculously expensive. You get get them for about 200 on ebay but its still a bit steep.

The main reason they're so comfortable is the massive number of adjustments you can do, and the way they flex as you move.

If you have more realistic amounts of money to spend on a chair I would budget £100-£200, you should be able to find a decent chair in the £100-150 range, any lower than that and I honestly thing the quality starts to dip considerably.

The most crucial things I think you have to consider are:
  • Padding/material (the more the better with the former, chairs that look like they have 'layers' of padding generally seem to hold up well and are far more comfortable)
  • Height of the chair (consider where your neck/head will be when you decide you want to lean back)
  • Lumbar/lower back support

Forget chairs that allow too much freedom of movement like rocking back and forth, these will do nothing for your back and just encourage lazy slouching and poor posture that will ultimately make any back issue worse. Also consider the overall adjustable height of the chair and clearance of your desk.

My chair is one of these: http://www.staples.co.uk/furniture/seating/executive-seating/leather-and-manager_s-chairs/veronesi-leather-faced-executive-chair-walnut

That was originally selling for £180 but I found a bloke on ebay with one virtually new and virtually unused that he sold to me for £100. Bloody bargain, I've had my arse in it for 6 months solid virtually, backache and fatigue I used to get is all but a distant memory.

If you want one similar just keep checking ebay, they seem to come up often...

If you work at a computer all day there are a few things you should never be cheap on IMO, the two most important of those is your monitor you stare at all day and the chair you sit in all day.

Is it for work or for a home office?

I didn't bother going for a conventional office chair on wheels for my desk at home - decided to get an eames DSR chair.

Have two more of them by a table in the corner of my lounge which can be pulled out and then the chair at my desk in the other room can be a third dining chair if required. Also got two Panton S chairs for the balcony which can be taken inside if required. (though 5 people around the table would be a squeeze)

I use

Lasted me nearly 2 years (mine was earlier black version), good considering how big i am, and i've broken more chairs than i've owned cars and trust me i've had a lot of cars. Its starting to have random bits of metal drop off it now but still works, creaks now and then and i just WD40 it.
