I was thinking... Car breaking...

Of starting a business of breaking cars. Just want your opinions. I havnt thought this through a lot, just some initial thoughts at the moment. (so dont slate me if this is a bad idea)

My 1st thoughts, buy really cheap cars non runners, MOT failures and basically take them to bits.

Now, the 1st thing that came to mind is storage.
Where would I keep the car/parts? I have been doing a little looking and found quite good sized workshops in Newcastle for about £6000 a year and itd be quite easy to get some shelves and tools for the job of dismantling. Most of the tools I have anyway.

I then thought transportation of the cars, as these may be non-runners or have no tax/mot I wouldnt want to drive the car (if it could be driven) around anywhere tbh.
So a car trailer would be needed (which I could also do a side line of car transportation too) of course Id buy a cheapish Volvo 740 for the towing, probably a 2.3L Turbo manual, of the car trailer. (reliable and ok on the juice)

I would buy the car, maybe from ebay or local auctions or papers, anywhere really and then asses to see if I could put it back on the road with little cost. If not then Id break the car up, and then place the parts on ebay or forums around the internet, maybe if its a rare-ish car then find a owners club forum/magazine.

Id set a website up and update the stock list onto there too.

What do you guys think? As I said, just some initial thoughts but I think If I bought a car for £100 and there are 50 salvagable parts on the car, sell each part for average of £10 and thats £400 profit.

But the one thing I dont know is how long itd take to take a car apart. Id suspect a good few days though.

I dont think youll see any money out of it.  People will just go to the scrappy.

People do tend to go to the scrappy first but if they cant find what they want there then its an idea.

of course plenty of other people have thought of it first and there are specialist car breakers on the web already.

Say £10,000 running costs and £20,000 wages for yourself - £575 a week...

Things like doors, carbs, gearboxes youd get a fair bit for but most of the other stuff is peanuts. Itd have to be niche like said^, anything common people will go to scappies for; problem is finding 4-5 spitfires/mgbs/rs2000s a week to turn over.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

One idea I just had was to send a list stock and prices to scrappies and other salvage companies and if they dont have a part and some guy (or girl) comes in saying "blah blah have you got this part?" and they havnt then they could look at my list and add what ever they want on and get that as commision.

Dont forget the regulations on breakers are a lot tighter than they used to be, you have to recover all the fluids and dispose of them correctly.

Id say you could strip down a hole can in a day easy.

you only really want the hich cost parts from it, the things that people would come to you for, lights, doors/boot/bonnet, engine and box, lock sets,

if yopuve already got a fiesta steering wheel on your shelf, theres no point keeping another, itll probably never sell, and if it does youll have a new one in no time anyway :)

youll need LOADS of storage room tho :o

I think Ill get myself a transporter, a thing that can be towed and a car to tow it and just do tows of cars that need to be transported, advertise on ebay or where ever and I think it could make me a little bit of money. I wouldnt do it full time though, just part time tbh.

I dont think Ill be doing car breaking as I would really need a LOT of space as Alan says.

Ive been thinking, car breaking would take a lot of space and not a lot of demand for the parts. Highly competitive, Im just going to open a brothel instead.

Nah, seriously, I was thinking of Starting an electronics/computer components site. I have a friend who wanted to do the same. Which will be easier to get contacts opposed to doing car breaking.
