Wiring up my flat - Cat6?
on: July 16, 2009, 13:22:57 PM
Im looking to rewire my flat, as we have crappy cables sitting around everywhere.

We use Gigabit, so should I be using Cat6 cable? Will this stuff do the job:

Also looking at this, although it mentions Cat5e - surely itll be ok for Cat6 as well?

Im just about to begin the labourious task of wiring my house too.

Ive decided on CAT5, as whilst CAT6 does provide for faster than existing speeds. The cable seriously detoriates if the run length is too long or you bend the cable around too many corners.

I was thinking of dropping CAT6 from my loft (main switching stage) to the individual rooms and then using CAT5e for any wiring that needs to go around corners. However, I now think, given that all my bandwidth needs are catered for by 1gb networks that Ill just use CAT5e throughout.

The most strenuous task the network will have will be to stream a 15Gb 1080p MKV file from my media server, guessing Cat5e with a gigabit network should more than handle that?

Hmm saying that the reviews for that 100m spool on Amazon are quite iffy.

go for the cat 6 - for the initail price, its worth paying the extra for now instead of regreting it later.

How many ports per room are you running btw?

My house is all cat5e - Its quite thick stuff as well, not the thin sh*t thats passed off as cat5 that usually isnt shielded.
Every room has 4 Ethernet - 1 for PC, 1 for VOIP & the other two for HD streaming for a balun device that never got released.
Though there are single UTP Balun devices available. 2x Grey for video, 1 orange for VOIP & 1 Purple for data.
I bought 4x 305m boxes & used the lot!
Also have twin CATV to each room. 1 for cable & 1 for satellite. - over a mile of cabling & drilling through walls & joists.
Took a whole weekend to do (luckily floorboards was up & the ceilings was down).
