Akira (Live Action) 2013
on: November 14, 2011, 03:07:56 AM
Me and Clocked been chatting about this movie on MSN, what is going on, not a single Japanese actor has been cast/rumoured for it so far.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1134795/

Garrett Hedlund - Tron Legacy - as Kaneda

Gary Oldman - Fifth Element etc - as The Colonel

Helena Bonham Carter - Fight Club - as Lady Miyako

Keira Knightley - Pirates of the Caribbean - rumoured

What are they thinking, why can't we see an all Japanese cast, we don't need A-Listers, a cast of unknowns like we saw in Cloverfield would work nicely.

When you think about Masi Oka and James Kyson from Heroes and how well they would work as Kaneda and Tetsuo (pointed out by Clocked) and i assume they would cost together as much as 1 of the actors above, it just doesn't make any sense.

Enough of this, i hate seeing Hollywood ruin good movies by re-releasing garbage, but until now i have skipped over these movies, but this is Akira!

PS. If Takeshi Kitano doesn't get so much as a cameo, i wont be bothering to watch it.

Couldn't agree more with all that, the whole casting and setting the film in Neo-New York (which just sounds forking stupid in the first place tbh) instead of Neo-Tokyo completely disregards the essence of the film.

I still can't believe some bright spark gave this trash the green light and I honestly don't believe Americans want to see this adaptation Americanised any more than we do.

100% without a shadow of a doubt!

Big movie companies just do not get it, there been plenty of well recieved movies with all asian cast English speaking or not. Old Boy for example. If some had the muscle and money to be more well known they would do well.

This is a big fail in my view. You can not take the story and butcher its core elements. It wont work.

Old Boy might have been recieved well but how much money did it make in comparison to an English speaking movie, as soon as the average cinema goer sees that its subtitled then they'll stay well clear.  So as ever with Hollywood it all comes down to money and how much of it they can rake in, again.

It'll probably fail spectacularly, but I'll be willing to give it a go when it comes out I'm not holding out much hope as they'll probably butcher the script to make it so the average hill billy can understand it.  I just hope they don't change the music, the soundtrack to the original is rather epic, especially the bike chase scene at the begining.

I'm not sure it wouldn't generate pretty good revenue. Akira is a pretty iconic film, even people that aren't into Manga know about it so it's not like they are putting out a brand new film that no one would know anything about or have no expectations of.
