Domain Problem
on: July 12, 2007, 10:35:20 AM
A friend of mine is having problems with a domain.

The domain in question is an ecommerce site which is being migrated from one server to another (banking system as well, Barclays to NatWest).

The problem lies with access to the actual domain settings. This particular domain was setup quite some time ago (1999), and due to the way theyve been running things for the last 6-7 years, no ones really paid attention to whats been going on with the registrar. From what he tells me a company called BusinessServe held the domain so thats where they originally went to setup name servers etc, but this was quite some time ago. Since then the company has either changed name, been sold on, etc.

When he finally managed to speak to someone about the domain at the new name company they told him theyre just parking the domain, that theyd inherited it and they couldnt do anything with it.

Now this strikes me as a bit odd; the original registrar is gone, theyre parking but dont have details to make changes...

Because of all this he cant accept orders on the site as Barclays have stopped the trading on it, and while the new server with NatWest is setup the domain doesnt point there. To make things worse the domain is due for renewal in Sept.

Anyone have any ideas? Im a bit suprised the company which has parked the domain cant transfer it, surely this is possible?

Damn sure it is possible, but Sam or one of the others will know far more than me. Be interesting to find out in case I have the same problem myself.

registrars all register with nominet uk, so thats your first port of call. call them and tell them the problem, if he can prove its his site theylllet him transfer it to a new registrar who will give him full control panel and bingo, hes got it back.

Yeah I had this problem with a domain I had registered with a registrar that then went bankrupt. I didnt get any warning so its a good reminder to keep tabs on your expiry date.

Anyway, contacted Nominet and could transfer the domain to a new registrar after faxing them a few details, proof of ID.. and an admin fee.

no, the .com is looked after by the american registrar whose name escapes me but a quick google will find it for you.
