Best Entry level CPU?

Im shopping around for a new entry(ish) level system....anything will be quicker now than my ageing Athlon XP 3000.

Can anyone help me understand the naming/performance description of the Intel cpus> Where are the best price/performance tradeoffs?

If youre after cheap then just stick with AMD, you can get a PIB 6000+ for £60 these days.
