Probably not, but good quality RAM that is worth having will set you back about £65 for 4Gb.  Plus, i think itll probably be an Intel rig.

I suspect they have done their normal trick.  There is one pack of it, somewhere in northern Scotland.

A fair few popped up on Ebay, and a big thread at Hexus about it. I was tempted to pop down my local today, but we only just discovered the wheel down here in the south so they probably wont have any in stock  :gag:

Pretty normal for them to advertise it.  they had some very cool multi-input LG monitors in a couple of months back, and in the end it turned out that the only place you could get them was Glasgow.

Higher quality ram doesnt make any difference at all, unless you want to overclock. Even then in most cases you get more speed from more ram.

You think in twenty years time when they break down that you will get an exact replacement?

Actually my snot sticks do have a lifetime warranty :P :nana:

Although I doubt its going to be worth using in a couple of years the way RAM prices have been going down :/

"lifetime Warranty" has been challenged in court a few times.  IIRC what it actually means is the realistic lifetime of something, not 10 years down the line.  Something like RAM would be considered to have a lifetime of up to about 5 years, after that the company is being nice letting you exchange it.

When it comes down to it youll often find Micron or Hynix chips being used on the cheaper "Quality" RAM anyway, so all you are really paying for at that point is the warranty, and when its £10 per Gb as opposed to £20 per Gb you have to wonder if its worth taking the chance.

Where are you buying from?  Ive looked in the basket, and prices including VAT are £360 plus P&P.  Are you brand sensitive?

My bad, the individual prices you gave were ex vat but the total was inc. vat :)

I was looking to buy from ebuyer really as they seem to be the cheapest around and it saves on delivery.

I think the AMD system youve suggested is pretty good for the price but I think a quad cpu+£100 gfx card would probably be overkill. Id rather spend the extra money on a silent case/psu.

This is what I now have:

Antec NSK1380 (£75)
Core 2 duo E5200 (£55)
Crucial/Corsair 2GB RAM (£25)
DVD drive (£15)
Seagate 500GB 32MB Cache - (£45)
Graphics card - Dont want to spend any more than £40-50 on this really

Thats £215 without the mobo and gfx card, is it worth getting a E7200 for £25 more? And is there much difference between the crucial vs corsair vs ocz branded ram (as opposed to branded vs cheapo ram)?

Beaker/Serious its £5, it looks nice.  If you posted less crap in one week serious you would save £5 in your Electricity bill

And p5x

I dont understand your response, AMD system and Quad system are 2 different systems.

And btw, Ebuyer dont currently stock a 4670, no real point spending £10 less on some other card, just make that £10 up somewhere else.

Heres another breakdown for you

All from ebuyer.

ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI 780G Socket AM2+ onboard graphics 8 channel audio mATX Motherboard    150282

Extra Value Black/Silver Cube Case No Side Window - With 650W PSU    125742
AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 3.1GHz Socket AM2 1MB L2 (2x512KB) Cache Retail Boxed Processor    149211
Seagate ST3500320AS 500GB Hard Drive SATA II 7200rpm *32MB Cache* - OEM    130826

ASUS 9500GT TOP Edition 512MB DDR3 DVI VGA HDMI HDCP PCI-E Graphics Card    149250

£321.92 inc VAT and shipping.  I did a bit of hunting around, and it seems you are better off with a 6000+ than a 5200, but the benchmarks are limited on that CPU because its newish, and even Toms Hardware havent done the chip in the reviews.

What you have there is the best small AMD chipset for the AM2+ series boards, an older Aspire Q-Pack case under another name (I used to have a Q-Pack as my HTPC, rather nice cases), energy efficient chip with a bit more grunt, and 2Gb of RAM.  What I would think of is what GFX you actually want.  I specced up an nVidia card, but putting the right ATi card in will result in a form of unbalanced crossfire where the 2 GPUs can share the load.  In these smaller cases I would avoid passive cooling due to airflow issues.  However they do have a 120mm fan in the back, but if you swap this for something like a Thermocool or similar ceramic bearing fan itll be very quiet.

These cases will take up to 3 HDDs alongside a couple of CD drives if required.

Thanks for those. Im not too keen on the cases tbh as id like to keep it as quiet as possible and im not sure what the PSUs on those cases will be like. I think bacons right on the RAM ting, id rather get crucial ram as its only a few quid extra.

Would you guys go for the AMD rather than the C2D cpu then?
