Moved over to Sky BB
on: September 26, 2011, 19:06:13 PM
Well to try to save some money on my monthly out-goings, I've switched over to Sky Unlimited Broadband, got a free router, and a free Sky HD box at the same time

They said on the phone I should connect at between 12-19Mb. The transfer was really smooth, at 1pm my internet went off, so I plugged in my new router, and approx 1.08pm the internet was back up and running! I didn't think it would go that smooth to be honest.

I've just checked the router, and it's only connected at 4Mb which is quite disappointing as my old provider it connected at 8Mb. Sky is only one of two companies in my town which has LLU, the other being talktalk.

They said it could take 10 days to 'settle down'. What does that mean? I'd have thought once the cable was plugged in at the exchange, you should get full speeds??

Cheers

If I remember correctly from when I set up the Be account back when they were one of the first to introduce 24 meg the first few days they test different line profiles, you'll probably be on the stability++ type of profile at the moment.

Yeah, the first couple of weeks you'll find that your speed fluctuates whilst the exchange end finds the highest stable speed on your line. It's a little unusual for it to not start high and work down though. You might want to test it everyday to see if it's at least increasing a bit.

Interestingly I find my parents home connection is now at 7.5mbps (previously it maxed at 6) all the time, as opposed to "peak" times. i don't know whether there's been a change in policy with nildram/pipex/tiscali, or whether me not being here that much has made them uncap us...

It's gone up to 6Mb since my post  Hope it keeps going.

The only stats I can find are:
Connection Speed   6142 kbps
Line Attenuation   11.5 dB
Noise Margin   15.9 dB

There is always this iffy and unstable period when you switch your broadband over or get it set up and then improves. You may even find that the hardware at the exchange has always been crap and the new company needs to install new bits or that to get you up and running they need to put their kit in your loop etc and have not done it properly etc as well.

I think everyone getting BB or changing company needs to expect issues to begin with and expect to much for good speed etc. Nice when it all just works but I always go in now expecting issues.

To be fair Sky said up to 10 days to settle, so it's fair enough waiting.

I went with Sky as there were a lot cheaper, but also uses LLU at the exchange. I thought that guaranteed better speeds in general?

Main reason its worth going with SkyBB for ADSL is its the only ADSL provider in the UK that doesn't have a fair usage policy :P

She did comment on that when I was ordering actually, and I just laughed it off, but she got quite defensive and commented again!

BE doesn't have a usage policy either

or if they do, they just don't care... I often go over 1tb a month and I've never heard a peep from them :-)
