SONY SAYS IT WILL  add a button to the Network Menu on its PS3 to enourage users to connect to Stanford Universitys Folding@home programme.

Or users can optionally set the application to run automatically whenever PS3 is idle, it annnouced last night.

Folding@home is a distributed computing project attempting to broaden the understanding of protein folding, misfolding which can cause diseases such as Parkinsons, Alzheimers, cystic fibrosis and many cancers.

In its announcement Sony claims its Cell chippery is "roughly 10 times faster than a standard mainstream chip inside a personal computer."

An associate professor of chemistry at Stanford University said he was "thrilled" to welcome Sony to the, um, fold. µ

Thats just foolish, I can see the news now:

A house in London was burnt down today by a Playstation 3, due to an over heating problem. No one was in the house but it was running under maximum load for folding@home.

Aye that would increase sales :D

Clicky for video. :)
Id like to be able to do this kind of crunching on the 360 too, since I sometimes leave it on in that low power mode you can do with the play & charge kit. :)

Hold down the dashboard button with a wireless pad plugged in and low on battery, and switch off your xbox using the menu.
It should power off properly once the controller has finished charging. :)
