It's only out of date if you're a hipster with more money than sense and a very low IQ who absolutely must have the latest shiny gadget to help improve the size of their e-peen.

It comes as a surprise to many but older versions of Apple products continue to work! They don't self-destruct the second an updated version is launched and will continue to give many years of faithful service if looked after correctly.

Title is a bit wrong. From reading articles online it's not really an ipad 3 mini as the internals are from the ipad 2.

To be fair, you wouldn't expect to buy a premium product and within 8 months it be superseded.
People who buy these things expecting to sell it on after 12 months to get the next one have just had a chunk wiped off their resale value.

If I was daft enough to buy an iPad, I'd feel pretty sh*t on right now.

Really? I'm not sure why people are that bothered, or if many actually are?

I don't see why a company shouldn't release new products? It's like saying to intel, no we don't want a new processor and getting pissed off when they do? Just because its apple there seems to be some need to see this as negative?

I've got an original iPad and it still does everything I want it to do?

Imagine you'd bought your original iPad.  Shelled out £400 and 6 months later they released another iPad, same price, much better specced.
Basically wiping off a massive amount of the resale value before it's time...Kinda like buying an Alfa Romeo.

Using the intel analogy is flawed.  They are releasing new stuff all the time.  They aren't just refreshing one product over and over every other month.
They release new products, faster and more expensive than the last.

A lot of misconceptions here and I can see listening to the news from some too.
NEVER follow or listen to general news on tech stuff, you all should know that by now. They always get the facts wrong or misguided.

Ipad mini is a new market to compete with the android tablets here. Android tablets can not gain ground to much on the main tablet market. BUT they are doing really well in the 7 inch market due to cost and use in terms of the one hand hold and reading on a bus, reading and things like that which are not that viable on the bigger tablets.
Apple for one of the rare times wants in on that and not the first to jump into that.
Hence the Mini.
I think it wont sell that well though because it is quite a bit higher price and it is an area apple are not used to , the cheaper option. If you want the apps and eco system you likely already invested in it and as some here rightly point out - you got an iphone, ipad etc so do not need this.

Ipad 4 is the full whack so ipad mini is not outdated by this so that is very much the wrong chain of thought.
Ipad 3 to 4 was a short burst but apple want to replace everything to the lightning port ASAP which I can see why because of the 3rd party market. The 3rd party folk will have wanted this to swap over ASAP and there has been event meetings between Apple and these a lot recently over the new doc connector.
Cables, devices galore would be in limbo if Apple had half things on one port and one on another to much. ALL devices using it asap is better transition.

In terms of the outdated product side of things... Sucks but people by the new ones all the time, simple as that. Apple would not be where they are if this was not the case.

In terms of resell value - this is untrue. Every Apple device I look after and look to sell I all but got my money back for it and used it to by the new device. They hold up in value very well because it is Apple and they overall build a device that holds up well and is one that just works even years later.

I only just got a new macbook pro after 6-7 years of my other one which was a bit bashed up but still works better then some pc laptops you can get right now!

So it would have been fine if Apple released a new product if they charged more for it? The only people I see losing out on this are the people who must have the latest apple product, who have more money than sense anyway?

Damn Apple providing a better spec'd product at the same price  :worried: Oh no!

But I expect despite that the resale value will still be high, it's an Apple product they always are! And when I buy a product I don't really think about how much I'll get for it when I re-sell, I think how much bang for the buck can I get, and I couldn't care less if they released a subsequent version, it's like buying a computer, there's always new components and machines coming out?

Buying an Alfa isn't a like for like comparison either, and I'm not sure of the relevance or even what comparison is trying to be made TBH?

Didn't intel also release Nehalem and Sandy Bridge processors? one replacing the other?

To be honest if everyone released better spec'd products more often then it'll only drive the tech forwards, and most of the people that are moaning about the move are people who don't own the product :)

But where's the usual price creep?  Products generally get cheaper as they get older.  Anyway, I'm speaking on behalf of a friend of mine who has been bugging me for months about which one to buy.  She finally makes her mind up and within 5 days it's superseded.  She's more than a little pissed off.  And I can see her point.

how is the ipad mini competing with 7' androids tablets when its more than twice the price of the soon to be released kindle fire & almost twice the price of the samsung galaxy?
As for the new doc connector - what about all them cables, dock stations, alarm clocks, media units, etc. that all have the old connector? sure an adapter will be available, but IMO apple have done it for the oposite reason - its to screw 3rd party vendors & got them left sitting on millions of pounds worth of useless stock.

Apart from all that - i have an ipad 2, i dont see any big difference over this an the latest ipad4 - at least no new features I need. I will upgrade next year to the newer Ipad as my ipad 2 contract is up - no chance of me going to an android as they arent up to much from the 5 or 6 I have used & tried. One thing apple does a lot better than any other manufacturer is that even a 2-3 or 4 year old device does not feel dated.

I'm sure she is, but if she bought a car a few days before a new model came out, same would apply? A little google would have told her that there was going to be an announcement, can't she also return the goods? Obviously depends on returns policy

Apple has extended the returns for the 3rd Gen iPad, so she'll swap it out.
However, who actually thought they would release another new iPad so soon after the new one?

I would assume its because their product releases are all over the shop.
Maybe they plan on having new ipad/pod/phone in the autumn & laptops, computers in the Spring?

Like was said above by nexus, the dock connector change is the main thing that probably drove the decision, so they probably had two options on that basis, delay the previous iPad until now, risking market share when Google were about to bring out the nexus, or release a new model at the same time as the iPhone due to the doc connector.

I expect everything will go back to normal now, until apple bring out another propriety connector :)
