If I was daft enough to buy an iPad, I'd feel pretty sh*t on right now.

Really? I'm not sure why people are that bothered, or if many actually are?

I don't see why a company shouldn't release new products? It's like saying to intel, no we don't want a new processor and getting pissed off when they do? Just because its apple there seems to be some need to see this as negative?

I've got an original iPad and it still does everything I want it to do?

Imagine you'd bought your original iPad.  Shelled out £400 and 6 months later they released another iPad, same price, much better specced.
Basically wiping off a massive amount of the resale value before it's time...Kinda like buying an Alfa Romeo.

Using the intel analogy is flawed.  They are releasing new stuff all the time.  They aren't just refreshing one product over and over every other month.
They release new products, faster and more expensive than the last.

I disagree, Apple are well known for releasing upgraded products in this way, far more so than Intel but it is the same process. The sad truth is the Apple fans don't care and have money to burn. They just want the latest and greatest. Eventually some do get the idea that they are being pushed through the tech grinder, but then again, everyone else is to an extent.

The only thing I've ever bought from Apple is a keyboard, which wasn't as good as my old IBM one  :ptu:.

A lot of misconceptions here and I can see listening to the news from some too.
NEVER follow or listen to general news on tech stuff, you all should know that by now. They always get the facts wrong or misguided.

Ipad mini is a new market to compete with the android tablets here. Android tablets can not gain ground to much on the main tablet market. BUT they are doing really well in the 7 inch market due to cost and use in terms of the one hand hold and reading on a bus, reading and things like that which are not that viable on the bigger tablets.
Apple for one of the rare times wants in on that and not the first to jump into that.
Hence the Mini.
I think it wont sell that well though because it is quite a bit higher price and it is an area apple are not used to , the cheaper option. If you want the apps and eco system you likely already invested in it and as some here rightly point out - you got an iphone, ipad etc so do not need this.

Ipad 4 is the full whack so ipad mini is not outdated by this so that is very much the wrong chain of thought.
Ipad 3 to 4 was a short burst but apple want to replace everything to the lightning port ASAP which I can see why because of the 3rd party market. The 3rd party folk will have wanted this to swap over ASAP and there has been event meetings between Apple and these a lot recently over the new doc connector.
Cables, devices galore would be in limbo if Apple had half things on one port and one on another to much. ALL devices using it asap is better transition.

In terms of the outdated product side of things... Sucks but people by the new ones all the time, simple as that. Apple would not be where they are if this was not the case.

In terms of resell value - this is untrue. Every Apple device I look after and look to sell I all but got my money back for it and used it to by the new device. They hold up in value very well because it is Apple and they overall build a device that holds up well and is one that just works even years later.

I only just got a new macbook pro after 6-7 years of my other one which was a bit bashed up but still works better then some pc laptops you can get right now!

how is the ipad mini competing with 7' androids tablets when its more than twice the price of the soon to be released kindle fire & almost twice the price of the samsung galaxy?
As for the new doc connector - what about all them cables, dock stations, alarm clocks, media units, etc. that all have the old connector? sure an adapter will be available, but IMO apple have done it for the oposite reason - its to screw 3rd party vendors & got them left sitting on millions of pounds worth of useless stock.

Apart from all that - i have an ipad 2, i dont see any big difference over this an the latest ipad4 - at least no new features I need. I will upgrade next year to the newer Ipad as my ipad 2 contract is up - no chance of me going to an android as they arent up to much from the 5 or 6 I have used & tried. One thing apple does a lot better than any other manufacturer is that even a 2-3 or 4 year old device does not feel dated.
Without looking into any facts, yep you can think that but...

1. Yes it is more expensive but apple cant do cheap but it is supposed to compete with the Android 7Inch stuff. I do not think it will because it is indeed to pricey but that is why it exists.
2. They have a big 3rdparty vender event soon and had meetings already with many over the new connector. They needed the space so had to go the way Android has with mico USB. IT has been years since they changed it to, to be fair. Iphone 4 can still be purchased so can the ipad 2 and lots and lots of people still have those that can by 3rd party stuff for them.
Like I said, change all your devices ASAP and you mitigate the 3rd party issue so they know all new stuff is new pin so all their new iterations which come out every year anyway will now all be compatible.

One of the daftest posts for awhile TBH. If you really believe this you're kidding yourself. Yes there's a minority like this, but no different than there are fanboys of every brand. Most Apple users I know are average people who buy Apple because they know it will work for 4/5 years without any need to upgrade. It's covered by the best warranty policy there is on the market, and any software upgrades are free and easy to install. It works, it's easy and more often than not its years ahead of the competition. You're peddling stereotypes from South Park and the Daily Mail - and it's ridiculous. There are far, far more people upgrading their latest intel CPU with every release than there are people upgrading their iPads or MacBooks.

Which begs the question why can't apple follow the de-facto standard and go micro USB?

Bloody proprietary balls.

There is no comparison between Intel releasing a range of faster processors on schedule to a demanding market and how Apple releases upgrades of a single product to a market that didn't demand it until they told them they wanted it.

Agreed, there is still a lot of people that wont touch apple because it is apple, and have thoughts based on other things without even trying it.
Not perfect, nothing is, but totally right about how solid they are.
I will spend more money buying a macbook pro because I know when I use it day in day out it wont be broke in a few months time!

Based on what?  It's built in the same factory as Dell and Acer, by the same people.
It's just a PC in a fancy case these days, there's nothing different about it other than the morons who happily pay over the odds for a bit of aluminium.

Lets look for a moment at the Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook.  Screen quality aside, that's every bit as well made as a Mac.  Same with the Lenovo X1, and the Dell XPS Ultrabooks.
There is just no need to pay that much for a PC in a fancy case.

I've got a Dell Inspiron 17 that I got 2.5 years ago.  I've changed the HDD for something bigger and took advantage of some cheap ram and took it to 16gb.  Which with a PC is easy.
Can't remember the last time a software update charged me,  and I could have 3 year next day business replacement warranty if I wanted to shell out another £100 on top of the cost of my laptop.
Sure, it's made of plastic but it's nowhere near dead and has daily use, dog standing on it and chucked about in the car.

I'll be changing it next year, as 17" is too big.  It still won't be a Mac, as I can get almost every single one of it's "benefits" in an Intel Ultrabook for a fraction of the cost.

I didn't say the majority of Apple buyers were like that, I specifically said the Apple fans. You seem to be very good at misreading posts  ???

Did I forget to say that Apple fanboys along with diehard Republicans also tend to refuse to believe the patently obvious? What I effectively said was that Apple are no different to any other US corporation, they promote their products and sell them to anyone who will buy. What they have achieved is an aura of product superiority - which was once true but now may or may not be correct. I haven't used Apple's latest products but their early ones almost every upgrade was to another non-compatible product.

A Computer Shopper columnist called MacBiter continually criticised Apple's attitude to upgrading to completely incompatible hardware. For some reason they would always get away with doing it and they still are.

Looking at the ifixit breakdowns and some other information they defiantly not the same build quality, hardware configuration compared to my macbook pro, casing, screen... Decent laptops but not a patch on my macbook pro and lots of the web agree.
Lots of people I know by macbook pro's or airs and hate the OS and put windows on it but the hardware is better then other PC offerings.

Also looks like the ipad mini is selling and predictions will sell well and may even become the top selling ipad of them all.

there was no reason to change the doc connector & bringing out an ipad4 so soon after the ipad3.
Yea I undertand the 3rd party issue, but this was not a reason to rush an ipad4 - as they would already had the new connector in pre production phase for the iphone 5. More than enough pictures released. Only thing I can really think of if its a manufacturing issue (setting up the automount jigs, etc.) or supply chain. Maybe they simply was running low on the old connectors & didnt want to purchase a few thousand more knowing they have the new connector. EIther way, Apple have not done it for the customer benefit, only their own to save a few pennies in production.

Just because Apple stuff are made in the same factory as other manufacturers, it means Jack sh*t as Apple will specify what components to use from the chasis to the smallest resistor. I used to have long chats with a R&D when at sony just out of curiosity & i was suprised how much more detail was put into the sony kit, compared the 3rd party kit they manufactured. The build quality would be the same, as in the assembley process, but that can be about the only similarities.
