Author Topic: X360 - Is the VGA cable suitable for PC port on HDTV?  (Read 1586 times)

Hi all,

Im relatively new to the X360, but i have it ready to setup for the first time.

Just really wanted to know if the VGA cable was any good for using on the VGA port of my HDTV as opposed to using the Component HD cable that came with the console?

I have seen screenshots of the X360 running on a PC monitor, and it looks amazing, im doubting this is the same if you use your HDTV as an equivilent PC monitor, right?

Thanks

MGT

I was quite happily running my 360 @ 1280*1024 into the VGA port on the back of my 720p Plasma; its fine. There was one small issue in that the res I was running was not a scalable HD res and so circles looked ever slightly oblong.

I recently changed it over to component so that I could hook it back into my AV receiver and I have noticed that the colours look richer but any onscreen text is less well defined.

Right i see what you mean. I wish everything was as easy as it was some some years back, the perfect answer to any console i bought, RGB SCART lol, best quality, but now with HD, and so many different cables and technologies, its really difficult lol.

I suppose i can get the vga cable, and compare with the component, no harm in doing that i guess, and maybe the only way i can see for myself isnt it. :)

What TV have you got?  What are its specs?

It can be very difficult to recommend one input over another if you dont have access to both types of cable.  Some tvs looks much better when via component and overs by VGA.

My TV is the latter although on compnent you get far more control over the picture.  Unfortunately due to the 2% overscan on the component input the image is scalled slighted causing lots of pixellated edges in games.  VGA does not have this issue on my tv, it has 1:1 pixel mapping.

I ru nmy 360 over VGA at the panels native 1366x768 and it looks stunning.

It originally looked a little washed out, but now the Spring update has gone out you have an option to tweak the colour settings for VGA as they were defaulted to a very compressed range. Switched to full range and it now looks much better than component.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

Hi,

My LCD is a 26" Panasonic Viera - TX-26LXD70

The list of specs is rather long, so here is a link to the page showing them.

Use VGA cable at 1920x1080 with no problems.

You need to check in the user manual as all of the resolution/scanning information on that webpage are for the component/hdmi inputs. Youll find that somewhere in the manual there is a list of support resolutions and refresh rates for the VGA port.

Also, I suspect that like my Pana TV, although the panel res is 1366 x 768, the native res of the screen will be something different. Mine is 1024*768 (or 1280*1024) as pixels in the screen are not square, they are rectangular !

Its not a bad thing but its not great. It means that the TV is always doing something to the picture that is fed in and I never get a true 720p image; I always seem to lose a few pixels from the top and sides.

Manual for your TV

I dont think you will have an issue because the 360 will output at  the native panel resolution.  Most TVs will not accept 1080p via VGA from the 360 so will most likely not work.  I suspect your TV supports 1080p but will scale the image down to its native resolution.  A work colleague of mine has a Plasma that has native res of 1024x768 yet advertises that it supports 1080p.  Shame it doesnt actually display 1080p.

Even if your tv only does 1024x768 over vga, you can always set the Widescreen flag.  Having said that, if it accepts native res via Component but not VGA you may as well stick with Component.

Manual indicates support for 640x480, 852x480, 1024x768, 1366x768.  Also looks like you would hook up the audio via the Component Audio input.

I bought the VGA cable and setup the 360.

Played around the different resolutions.

It seems 1280 x 1024 is the best, but i can see verticle lines on when the screen displays black.

I have set it down to 1024 x 768 and it looks very similar in terms of quality, but there are no lines, so it seems perfect, i cannot really notice a different, aside from the text is a little blurrier. 1366 x 768 doesnt fit the entire screen lol, and 1920 x ... doesnt display at all, but i can hear sound.

Can any explain to me what HD modes the following resolutions are, ie 1024 x 768, is the 480p? And 1280 x 768 is that 720p? And so on?

Thanks

MGT

Thanks mate :)

Im not sure why the 1366 x resolution doesnt fit the entire screen?? I can also a green line at the bottom of the panel... :( Its a shame as it can clearly display it.

Finally sorted! :D

Running at 1366 x 768, i found some hidden VGA options on my TV, and it allowed me to position the screen perfectly in the center and edit the clock phasem its awesomely smooth now! I am amazed at the quality.

Thanks to all for the great help :D
