router problems

been trying to help a mate out who has been using his wireless setup to access the internet for ages without any security.
someone told him to secure it in his router control panel (sitecom WL-527) but since he has done that he cant access the internet at all.
ive had a good look at it and I can log in to the router and have checked that the mac filtering hasnt been switched on or anything daft.
the password for the access point is correct etc. I even removed the password and left the router security as open.
we can see the sitecom listed under view wireless networks and we can connect to it (signal is excellent) but even when it says we are connected we cant connect to the internet. just get page cannot be displayed.
anyone got any ideas whatssup?

urgh, I had to do one of those for a customer a few months back, we swapped him out to a Speedtouch 585 he had in a box. The security didnt like the Broadcom in my lappy, or his, but the Atheros WiFi in his old machine worked flawlessly.
