lets just say im insulted
on: April 18, 2007, 22:41:15 PM
and very very angry at the virgin media support stupidity.

anyway, peoples opinions please:

home network for a friend: the network works fine, all pcs can connect, perfect. But theres no internet.

Directly connect a PC to the modem through USB = working, perfect.
Directly connect a PC to the modem through Cat5 = Nothing, no NIC lights, no lights at the back of the modem, no connection what so ever.

the people at virgin told me the pc is broke. but theyre wrong, because it works fine when connected to the router.

in my opinion, its quite blatently either an ISP or a modem problem (I think the ethernet port on the modem is faulty).

any input at all welcome, if you think im right, please tell me, because the cheeky foreign bitch from Virgin told me I was wrong and stupid.

Insist on speaking to 2nd line or the team manager then 2nd line, they will/have to put you thru if you insist and refuse to get off the phone.

You could also insist on an engineer visit. If the engineer comes out, plugs his laptop in [after rebooting the modem] and all works fine, there will be a charge though, so be warned!

I work for Virgin media and if your connection works fine with USB but not Ethernet [im assuming you rebooted the modem after swapping over as this MUST be done due to the cable modems being..... not the best] then it does indeed sounds like a replacement modem is needed!

Also im not too sure how much your paying but as for everything in life you get what you pay for!

I work for the business sector and we provide cable modems as a business package, yup its a touch more than the residential product but you get 1000 times better support imho...

Anyway, insist and kick up a stink....

Good luck :)

yeah multiple reboots including turning absolutely everything in the room off for half an hour, then rebooting.

You dont mention whether you tried another Cat5 patch lead into the cable modem? They do fail sometimes.

With a cable modem through ethernet, does the NIC IP binding assume the IP address of the modem, or is there a degree of NAT? In the latter presumably youd have to restart the modem and then the pc to get DHCP to work?

I tried three different cables, and they all worked fine to communicate with the router.

the NIC should use the modem (global) IP. but it doesnt, communication between the modems ethernet port and the NIC just doesn not exist (media disconnected/little icon in system tray with red x)

depends on the modem, but you may need a crossover cable... are you using the CAT cable that came with the Modem?

I find the Modems can be fussy about swapping between USB & CAT5.

See if theres a hard reset button somwhere on the modem (you may have to take it apart)

Can you log into the modem over cat-5? that should hopefully narrow down if the problem is indeed the ethernet port on the modem.

The ip address for ntl/virgin modems is 192.168.100.1

bingo gringo id say. I thought it was the case cable modems were to be used as an uplink to a hub or switch... therefore unless the switch is a fancy pants auto sensing uplink one, youd need a crossover.

but there should be someone on here more experienced in virgin broadband.

Cable modems cant be used directly connected to a switch or hub AFAIK, Youd need a router to take on the external IP interface first.

Quite right but you can go PC->Modem using CAT5 x-over. The PC NIC picks up the external IP.

I havent tried a cross over, you dont need a cross over with mine, but mine is an older modem. Will try it later :)

My old one did need a crossover cable (3Com CMX)
my 2x newer ones (the Grey NTL Branded one & the newer little blue one) uses a straight through.

yeah its definitely that link so either a cross over or if that fails too then it sounds like a dodgy connector on the unit

Much much more likely to be a crossover problem as the female connectors hardly ever break

Your problem obviously lies between the netowrking capabilty of the PC and the router.  One suggestion I would make is that anti virus software could be blocking the network?

Ive seen it many times after putting a BT Business Hub into Norton asking what should I do with this network....

Presuming it is all setup & correct at your end, speak to someone higher up.  First line support dont know anything, they will be folowing instructions on screen.  Usually kids on 8k.
