Mambo/Joomla - something else?
on: January 28, 2011, 15:11:50 PM
Looking to use some free stuff like mambo or joomla as a basis for some URLS I have had sitting gathering dust for too long, I'm looking for easy and quick, any recommendations?

I'm using TYPO3 for my littlegreengeek re-design.  It's good and very powerful.  It can be a little head-scratching at times.

Drupal is another.

Here's my devsite, I'm working on.

It's pretty much a bone stock TYPO3 page with the words changed for now.

I've been playing with Drupal and I quite like it. The back end is a bit convoluted but everything is there and more, it just takes a bit of time to find.

Wordpress. :P

Looked at the other recently, but Wordpress is the one to go for.

Having worked with Joomla/Mambo and Wordpress, I would never put another site on Joomla again. It's awful, bloated garbage. Powerful, but needlessly complicated in being so, and everything is clunky and hard to configure.

Wordpress is the easiest thing in the world to use, I gather Drupal is very similar.

Drupal basics and using pre-made templates etc is ok but if you want to do anything of anything like what we do mate it is a pain in the ass. Long development times. Once your done its really good mind, but its some effort.

As above with your other comments though.
Wordpress

I will throw in Expression Engine as well because that is a really robust and quick system, has its annoyances just like all of them.

concrete5. just throwing another one in the mix, but to be honest, i haven't used it cos the sites i build all demand their own features which are mostly built from scratch.

In terms of Joomla, they finally sorted the platform to be on a MVC Arch but they went stale after that. Plugins became harder to make, most charging for even basic addons and it just all went to pot.
I know they are working on 2 which focuses on developing with templating improvements and interface improvements but they have fell behind the rest.

I think I had enough when I had to go into xml mode and break apart the complexity of the menu output to put some spans in it and get a better format. Took me 2 minutes in the old system even thought the menu was garbage then.

I loved joomla but they not done anything with it, its gone the same route as Mambo before it and why most of that team went and did joomla in the first place :/
