From my experiance I wouldnt really be fussed if I was using and 64 or 32 version of XP.

With Vista providing there are not drivers you cannot find then I would not hesistate to go for 64 and try and get at least 4 GB in there.  Vista loves ram and will eat it all up, then ask for more.

I might go Vista once Windows pull the plug on XP...it should work properly by then. And I want to have a crack at getting the full 16gb of ram in my P45.

by that time Windows7 will be here, and after Vistas botched launch and failure to capture the market they expected they are likely have it come out of the door nicely sparkly and ready to use.

Beaker is correct they have again extended the life for xp. They have done so as standard for a bit longer but then to 2010 but considering the mobile / cheap laptop market but it will mean updates for all still.
And then windows 7 is going around the corner. Vista is not THAT bad of course but it is still terrible, been using it at work now for a few weeks and the file transfer and management is just appalling, it loves sticking files into folders I do not want it to and turning off aero sometimes going to standard when doing some network transfers and stuff and a google found it is a common problem.....
Despite what MS sings about Vista and how "well" it is doing they would have not chucked the Windows interface team as well as other windows staff to other projects when they been on windows for ages and get in the latest office interface team on it who were also brand new when assigned on the latest office which while takes a bit of getting used to is really good and even winning interface awards.

Windows 7 is as keeps being discussed on the forums less of a hog, loving the kernal.
It will look and feel similar to vista but I am glad even the files and folders are being re done.
