CPU Purchasing (possibly motherboard too)
on: March 16, 2009, 16:43:37 PM
Right then, Hunting around looking to upgrade the CPU in my machine, the 6000+ is running OK, but tied into the fact Ive got 8Gb of RAM, and a 4870 in there the CPU is feeling its age.  Im having the issue that my motherboard will officially only support up to a 95W TDP processor (Though its running the old 90nm 6000+ 125W pretty well, if a little warm).  Im trying to work out my options.

Option 1 :: Im considering a 9750, but of the retailers Im willing to buy from nobody has one in at the moment (I Wont buy from OCUK for instance), and Im thinking itll be unlikely they will get them at all now.

Option 2 :: Buy a Phenom 920 and hope the motherboard will let it work.  Its AM2+, and they are supposed to be pin-compatible, but ECS doesnt include the Phenom2 in their list of Supported CPUs.

Option 3 :: Buy a Phenom 920, and just pick up a cheaper motherboard that will support it (mATX something or other).

I wont be overclocking, so please, dont suggest a low-end Intel then overclock it.  Ive got 8Gb of 800Mhz OCZ Reaper DDR2, so I wont be moving to DDR3 any time soon unless it offers double the performance the DDR2 does, at the same price.  I wont be adding a 2nd card either due when its due for upgrade (Dec 2009/Jan 2010) because Ill be paying off my wedding this November.

Is there that much of a difference in price to negate thinking of Intel? (serious question, didnt look at AMD when I built my rig)

I want something that is upgradable in the future.  If I go Intel that means i7, which means DDR3, and I wont put less RAM in a new system than my existing system already has.  The price of DDR3, and the fact there is nothing wrong with the DDR2 I have now (Its less than 6 months old) means i7 is no-go.  S775 is also out as in 12 months itll be near impossible, and prohibitively expensive to get a CPU better than I already had.

Other options Im considering are an 810, or a 910.  The 810 is an AM3 part, but had the DDR2 memory controller too.  However nothing after the 9850 is listed as being supported in my motherboard, and I only found out the 9850 is supported after checking the CPU compatibility list for my board.  According to the online support nothing over a 95W TDP is supported, and I was under the impression that was a 125W part.

Edit :: SOrry, also forgot to add, about price.  Performance on the 940 is 5%-10% slower according to most benchies Ive looked at.
Intel
i7 920 = £250
Cheapest 1366 MB ::  £170
6Gb DD3 :: £131

AMD
Phenom II 940 :: £190
Decent Sapphire  MB :: £96
RAM :: Already got the 8Gb

BOOM! THread pretty much not needed now.  Found that AMD say the board I have (ECS A770M-A) is compatible with a Phenom 920.  Problem solved I would think
