Hows this for a tuned Windows XP 64?
on: July 25, 2008, 07:38:50 AM
Hope yall can see the picture?

This installation installed initially in under 500mb and used less than 70mb on bootup.  Since driver installation and installing a few other programs(Firefox for example) the installation has rose to just under 1GB and using 119mb upon bootup.

Boots in seconds, shuts down almost instantly.  Really fast just doing anything, very snappy.  Surprisingly, even though Ive stripped out almost every "feature" of Windows I can still play my music in Foobar, watch videos in Media Player Classic, play my games(BF2 and Steam stuff) and web browse in Firefox.  I dont need much else, love it!

The key is nLite. http://www.nliteos.com/

This software also alowed me to create an unattended Windows boot CD with SP2 and a whole host of updates slipstreamed.  Installing took less than 10 minutes!

Just wait until you need a bell or whistle now...

I dont have the patience or tenacity to go through all that process.

Id rather have an uber machine that copes with anything thrown at it and still flies along, even if Im unnecessarily wasting resources. Computers are too powerful these days for me to care about scraping the last few parts of a cycle spare.

Agreed.

However - I reckon I could be bothered to do it once to make a standard build for all our laptops at work. Weve some really old ones and people are always complaing about performance - could be a good idea.
Career, Wife, Mortgage... my sig was better when it listed guitars and PC's and stuff!

Thus the reason Im dual booting :-)  Got another less tweaked setup just incase :)

Infact Im tempted to trash that second install and try out my Windows Server 2008 trial disc.

Right - iv been having a play with this nLite program which is excellant! But iv got a couple of problems with it - when i came to testing my Unnatended version of windows it all ran fine up to just before the windows set up finished and it asked me whether i wanted to be part of a domain or just click no and just name the non grouped computer as WORKGROUP (basically the black dot was already on the no option but it still wanted me to give a name) and also it came up asking me to create a name for the computer (but i thought i had already altered all both of these options so they shouldnt of appeared!!) Have i done anything wrong or have i missed out an option? Basically everything else like my own user account, regional setting etc all worked fine,

EDIT - this is what i was on about the WORKGROUP option, its the same as this except the next button was greyed out unless i gave the No option a name - and i still didnt want this screen to appear at all

Lastly the second thing that i was on about was this screen that showed up too,

I thought i had already set this up on the unnatended options so why has it still came up??

Thanks - Liam

quite often, though there is something satisfying in handing a manager a real POS lappy when theirs has "Broken" if you know it only broke because they know you just took delivery of a shedload of shiny new kit.  *fondly remembers handing someone an M2 in exchange for the M3 that had*
