Digital output on PC
on: March 14, 2010, 13:28:34 PM
Hi guys.

I have now got a new PC which is a CCiVO-2036. This has a memory card reader and a DVD writer / CD writer.

The thing I am wondering is that I have a digital audio output at the back of the tower. Is there any speakers which would work with that or a way of connecting my HDTV to the PC for sound onto that? It has a bright orange and a black input and output colour.

Your help will be much appreciated. Cheers! 8-)

Have no idea. Its got a black input hole and a fluorescent orange output. All it says on there is digital audio. It says on my playback list SPDIF.

right well then you need a piece of AV equipment that has a SP/DIF connector the same as that, most AV receivers do, but youll find most consumer speaker kits and tvs will not as it requires a DAC. Basically, unless you have dedicated AV hardware, theres not much point trying to go through a digital connection.

I believe Pioneer or someone did a 5.1 Xbox 360 kit that supported digital connections (dont think it was SP/DIF though, might have been optical). Have a look on richer sounds for some 5.1 kits with receivers that support it, you might find a cheap and cheerful one.
Bear in mind everythingi s heading down the HDMI route now (all digital connections) so theres no need for recent equipment to bother with optical or SP/DIF.

Check this out:-

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Optical-TOSlink-Cable-Mountain/dp/B001PJZIC0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1268591751&sr=8-1

If im right, this should connect to the output into the optical on the back of my HDTV to get the sound playing on the HDTV?? If so, Id be getting that.

If the connectors are indeed the same as that optical connector then yes. Double check that your TV does in fact have an optical input.

It sure does. Its a little different to what I see on the PCs output and input but shows optical digital audio out in a grey colour with a cover on and glows red.

Ordered the thing yesterday and should arrive today. Had another look and what I described in the post above was the output for it.

On the left, however, is the one I was suppose to look for - Audio In which is in green on the back of the HDTV. Checked my TVs manual out and said it is used for PCs and DVIs. Maybe it is the right one.

No idea what you do and Im sorry for joining this late...

Your TV will have (as you have said) an Optical OUT. This is so that you can take the sound from the built in Freeview / FreeSat tuner to an AV receiver (or a like).

As clockd has said, you need an AV Receiver or a powered set of speakers that will accept an Optical Spdif connection.
You might want to check to see if your PC supports audio over HDMI (I know my laptop does). If I use that for the sound then it will come out of the TV speakers.

You should still be able to send it back, youre still covered by standard DSR on the marketplace I think. Just let them know you ordered it in error.

Have done clockd. Just awaiting reply. Had a quick search and seen a Black cable with same ends each side, also on Amazon, which stated for LCDs to PCs which I can get for just over a quid. Now, the cable was similar to what I saw when was searching for a spare power cable to power my new PC and came across a cable that me or my nan did not know what its for. Im gonna see if its the same as that cos if it is then I think I found what I was looking for. Do HDTVs now come with a pc tv cable link as well as audio cable for it as standard because I dont think I had one for mine which I had over a year ago now.

UPDATE - I got the cable I came across when at my nans last week and to my surprise, it works! It is the one I was after but it doesnt use the digital audio output on the back on the PC and goes into the usual soundcard connectors at the back and the other end fits into the Audio In on the back of the TV mentioned in previous post. It worked! The sound now plays on my TV as I want it to. :D

Now to find what to do with the speakers I used up to now.
