My van is currently stripped down to the metal and I want to paint the metal with a coating of plastic or something similar to stop it rusting. Looking at something that paints on as a asphalt/rubber/fiberglass emulsion.

The sort of stuff I really want is
Kool Seal Aluminum Roof Coating
but it is only sold in America.

The only similar stuff I can find in the UK is Cellar Paint but Im not too keen on spending £40 (£80 for 2 tins) on it.

I have also spotted the same sort of stuff made by Robinsons or something in B&Qs roofing section but this was also about £30 a tin.

Does anyone know of any cheap alterntives? links?

wheres it for ?

if its for the underneeth.... use roofing tar !

works great and lasts forever !

got a bit 5gal tub of it here ane used it once just to use it up.... that was a few years ago and thats the only thing weve used since !

used it to paint over rust etc.. plenty of times too and its always stoped the rust spreading :)

.... I know underseal is made to do all that etc.... used it plenty of times, but roofing tar is way way better !... plus its pretty cheap iirc...  but remember, it takes a few days to set ;)

Something like red oxide is probably a good bet, or some other high metal content paint.  Underseal is awful stuff, its ok until it gets perforated, then the rust starts and moves on from there.  You would be advised to put a coat of something like red oxide, then once its dry put Schutts over the top of it.  Double the hassle, but you will probably rust 1st.

I do alot of kayaking and store all my wet stuff inside the van. This can be upto a week at times but it usually a weekend. I also sleep in the back.

The paint in for the inside so fumes wont be a great idea. Im basicallydoing what this person has done:

p.s. are you insulating as well ?

what that guy on the page you linked said about insulation is wrong, he said big pockets of air insulate as well as small ones... thats not right... the idea is to trap the air in tiny pockets/bubbles inside the insulation so it cant move so theres no heat transfer by convection.... jamming the insulation in isnt a problem as long as your not squashing it flat etc... theres plenty of air still in it ;)

edit: p.s. got any pics of what your doing ? youve got me intrested now !

that stuff is what they paint on Galvanised railings and the like.  Its got a high Vinyl content, and sticks to a prepared surface very well.  Beats the crap out of hammerite because rather than flake when it gets banged it flexes.

Go down to the nearest Wilkinsons and have a look at their roofing stuff, might have some underseal paint too.

Underseal is useless unless you put some form of backing pain on it though.  As soon as you get a slight split in the damned stuff it starts to rust, and by the time the rust is visible its too late to do anything about it.

I know you need to paint it with red oxide primer first, should have made that clearer I suppose...

Went for some roofing paint that is sold in B&Q in the end.
Its called Thompsons Roof Seal (stated no priming! & was £20) and is a highly flexible water based acrylic coating.
In conclusion it doesnt stick as well as i hoped to the VW paint work but i think when i get all the insulation and vapour barrier in on top, it should be ok. I am worried about the floor tho! Although i have a VW mat to cover it and will add vapour barrier plastic to get the best i can.
The stuff will stay on fine but seems to come off pretty easily if it is scratched. It lied on the tin :(

I might start a work log on this if i get time as its becoming a bit of a beast. Pictures incoming knighty :P

Says 6 hrs on the tin but i left it overnight. I have covered the entire floor and sides now. The plan is to leave it for perhaps the rest of the week.
