MR2 Turbo
on: February 11, 2007, 17:30:11 PM
Hi,

Thinking about something japanese around the 5-6k mark, and am considering an MR2 turbo.

Whats the general concensus on these as a *DAILY* driver?

What is reliability etc REALLY like? What are parts prices like?

Ta

I like them, I looked at a na 2.0 one a while back and the only thing that put me off was the ins and the fact that they only work in certain colours with nice wheels, otherwise they look a little dated. Dunno about parts but I cant see how itd be worse than any other jap car, reliability should be fine as long as its not been thrashed to death.

5-6k would get you a new shape MR2 or Celica, but the 1.8 is meh imo and the wheels look tiny.

Some alternatives:

-FTO
-Integra R
- Porsche
- 200sx

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

How tight is the engine compartment on it? Some mid engined cars are a right bitch to service.

either the fuel filter or the oil filter is an engine-out job.  cant remember which.

they are sexy looking cars and i bet they shift, wouldnt fancy maintaining it though.

i had a spin in a FTO the otherday, the auto was very smooth and the tiptronic is great fun.

it was upto 100 in no time, even in the full auto mode. nice inside aswell, which is where most jap cars lose it.

i also like the 200sxs aswell.

my brother-inlaw uses a  celica GT4 at a track day car and really likes it for it... says its pretty quick too

.... which aint bad comming from a guy who uses a DB9 as a daily driver ;)

Had one over 3 years (4 in June) the following has gone wrong and needed replacing,

A taillight.

Perfectly happy being a daily driver, clutch is not heavy, and it behaves well if you cant be arsed to put your foot down. Just make sure to get a REV3 or above, which for £5-6k you will.

Parts are easily sourced, most parts are identical to the UK counterpart, and the engine bits are the same as a late celica GT4, toyota UK will happily service your car. Reliability wise the only trouble ive ever had was when my old battery was on its way out, changed the battery, now been fine for over a year.

Amusingly I recall you saying my car had a toyota sewing machine engine in  comparison to your porsches

Single exit exhausts arent my bag on the MR2, also those wheels are mediocre at best, also looks like the front lip spoiler will need a respray.

Third party steering wheel removes the airbag which is a bit crap IMHO, also any dealer that puts twin turbo usually should be avoided, anyone with a slightest bit of MR2 knowledge know they are twin entry turbo

Also mileage quoted as 0

aye, they have all their cars as 0 miles.

It has 62k on the clock with a recent timing belt (Thank f***)

The front splitter is getting sorted for saturday when Im going over to take a look and hopefully buy.

I have a set of wheels for her already.
