Author Topic: i have no knees left, but singlespeed mountain biking in ireland is a bit fun...  (Read 1661 times)

:) pictures to follow of some simply STUNNING scenery, taken on my 15 mile circuit of the Republics gorgeous mountain ranges...

Off road singlespeeding is not for the faint hearted, but if aint fit before doing it, you will be afterwards.... :D

Im off to find a tub of deep heat to rub on my knees...

 :whoops:

my ride (everyday) in pictures.

pedalling to the summit, knees burning, but awaiting the sh*t scary descent... :)

nearly there...

finito...

what comes up, must go down - easier said than done on a fully rigid singlespeeder :)

and after a hard day, why not sit at the bottom of the garden and enjoy the sunset?

You would have to provide me with front doing and Deore LX w Pauls thumbies, to even start to convince me to do said climb. I like em short and sweet. Nice payoff, though. :)

i thought i was a bit of a claudo chiapucci, till i hit that climb... the car strugged up it in 2nd! but i did get to the top and reckon i managed at least 40MPH on the way down...

Christ!!! theres spinning out, then theres badabing! :D lol.

Doubt you hit 40, as I used to have a speedo on my fully rigid Trek--anything over 25mph on woodsy singletrack felt insane. Even thirty on loose gravel should be a mind bender. You just trim the brake a little on a loose spot---and youll be picking your teeth out of your choice of roadside object. :D

Might I suggest nice and thick Ritchey Truegrips for a little added cush? Been using them since the 80s. Brilliant on rigids. Youll get used to gripping lightly when you can and just letting that front end dance a bit. I put them on the Brodie first thing. Ahhhh, like coming home.

NOT OFF ROAD, YOU CRAZY BASTARDO!

ON THE ROAD... F*CK ME, IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE OFF ROAD TO DO 40 ON THAT BIKE! Id have stacked it without quesiton :D

you have no idea how f**king steep the road leading from the off road sections to the feeder road were... id love to take my geared road bike on it.

EDIT: 25-30MPH on a fully rigid is more than possible off road... ive done it more than a few times and remember the fastest run for a very long time on mammoth mountain was set by David Baker on a fully rigid GT!

Its also worthwhile noting i used v rim brakes (on a hard ride) for the first time in 4 years then.

The Avids are superb - good feel, easily controlled and power comparable to my hydro discs (even in the wet), and considering the speeds i did, thats some going!

Gears,Hydros and Bouce FTW.
