Man Builds Bike From Scratch

I saw this guys SA hub when searching on Flickr. He wanted a particular kind of bike, so he just took a class and build one from scratch! Frame and everything.

A shoddy badly built one?

Could have bought an apollo if that was his criteria.

What crawled in your ear and took a dump? Looks like a nice decently brazed frameset with a smart choice of componentry. The pics arent clear enough to see the filework, but who cares on a utility bike. It is apparent that the frame has been poperly straightened on a  jig, and that hes got decent handbuilt CXP22/105 wheels. Rear Taiwanese S/A hub is even better made than the English versions, and has proven to be the most reliable shifting mechanism ever devised for a bike.

Do you instinctively dismiss anything that doesnt have full XT and a Rok Shok on it?

Last I checked, Apollo didnt use double butted tubing from Tange or Columbus, hand braze lugs, or spec entry level racing components. Anyway, even if you had Mike from A.N.T. up in Beantown build you something similar, itd run you $1400 with similar spec, and it wouldnt even have lugs.

No, I dismiss RockShox too. Its wank.

I still dont see your point though.  The guy lacks the experience of an frame builder, so what if its been straightened on a jig!  I can make a weld look tidy, but I wouldnt attempt anything that required the strength that a bike frame needs.

And it looks like a bag of nails.  Should have saved the hassle and bought a junker from a charity shop.

Also, look at its geometry!  with a head angle so slack thats going to be one slow handling mother.

Spec also doesnt make a bike.  Frame quality does.  I could get a cheap ass frame and hang full Sram X0 kit on it, Actually the best shifting gear on the planet, none of this 1950s junk.  And it would still be naff, all due to the poor frame.

Id take a good frame and poor componentry any day of the week as opposed to the other way around

to be fair, it looks like a city bike and not a DH/freeride bike...

if it was, i wouldnt touch it with a barge pole... the geometry does look a little perculiar.

i think its ok for a scratcher..

EDIT: yeah, hes just cruising about on it, i think it does look really smart.

Actually if its a brazed bike rather than a welded frame its not all the difficult to build. One of my friends made one at school as a project and hes no welding god, you just have to make sure you can temper or anneal (I can never remember which) the frame after and as max pointed out get it squared on a jig.
