Front Macpherson Strut Advisory
on: August 04, 2011, 01:40:20 AM
I was leafing through my MOT for the Skoda Octavia earlier as it is due in a couple of months, the last MOT had no fails other than a windscreen wiper, but I noticed an advisory sheet stating

Quote
Offside front macpherson strut has slight movement at the upper attachment [2.5.A.1c]

A quick google suggests that this is either overzealous garages finding fault with some sort of 'bush' that should never really need attention, or that its something that could potentially cause problems if left alone. Indications are that its also a complete forker to replace, hours of labour.

So should I ignore it and hope it doesn't present itself again/become a problem, or should I get it swapped? I gather the parts cheap, but the labour will be the problem.

I now consult the experts of Tekforums for their sage counsel in this matter

I had similar with the A4 (also quite common) but mine would squeak and went through on an advisory for 2-3 years, never failed so never replaced them.

It really depends how flush you are i suppose. Your welcome to come and stay down here again and ill get my mate to do it for £25/hour

I can't find a decent diagram to fine out which bush/joint/rubber/etc... they're talking about....

when does the MOT run out ?

do they mean the top rubber ontop of the spring ?

Yeah I think it means the top rubber on top of the spring. Apparently when the car is jacked up off the ground it can seem like there is excessive movement because this bush isn't directly mounted to anything, something like that.

It was this I was reading about it http://www.fgoc.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,2927.0.html

MOT is due 21st October

plenty of time till 21st of October then.... I'll give them a poke/wiggle next time I see you and we can go from there ;-)

if they need doing we should easily be able to do them in a day if not half a day.... it's an 02 right ?  so the bolts shouldn't be rusted on too bad :-)

I've found a photo of the front, off side, macphereson strut... I can imagine there would be a slight movement of the upper attachment, but not sure why that would be abnormal?
