The start of computer controlled driving?

Thats just keeping you within the speed limit, no more 110mph down the motorway for you when that becomes compulsory. There are already crash avoidance systems coming out for low speed driving and those will spread to high speed motorway too.

Eventually all you will do is put the key in and tell it where you want to go. Your time in control is more limited than you think, mwahahaha!!!

This is such a dumb idea. Firstly its doing 39mph, according to the speedo, which is probably nearer 35mph in reall life so it cant even count. Secondly sat navs get it wrong; mine beeps when I drive past or over a 30mph road on the motorway, if I was in the bmw lane and the anchors slammed on like that Id be screwed. Thirdly a beep is all you need - make something that beeps when the speed limit changes and have it flash up on the dashboard. Fourthly you need to go over the limit sometimes to get past slow things. Fifthly its totally gay.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Firstly, I know.

Secondly, my brothers does this so its turned off most of the time. I didnt know there was a BMW lane, perhaps its related to the crunchy nutter lane somehow? You shouldnt be driving so close anyway.

Thirdly, my brothers does this, as I said its mostly turned off or ignored cause its giving a wrong response.

Fourthly, why cant you sit behind that Sunday driver pulling a caravan for a few hours and just enjoy the view?

Fifth, agreed, but tough, you shouldnt be going over the limit as often.

Perhaps it would be useful as a punishment, for drivers with lots of points on their licence or for when you come off a ban maybe.  But for everyday driving its likely to create as many problems as it solves.  Some idiot is bound to drive at 60 on a country lane in the rain at night, and then have a crash, and blame it on the car for not limiting the speed appropriately...

Perhaps a more widespread implementation of Vauxhalls system would be better? You can program a per-key alert when you exceed a pre-defined speed. Ive set the missuss at 75mph (new driver) whereas I have no limit :D

Theyll never have the system stable and reliable enough to implement it for years. Bunch of bollocks.

i had a 307 hire care and that had a speed limiter, only useful thru towns really tho

the cruise control on the other hand was pretty useful on the motorway

Personally I think the idea and implementation is completely flawed.  Even roadcraft justifies a temporary use of excess speed to get round slower moving traffic so long as you return to the limit after a manouver.

As for using GPS to work out where you are and the limit, the number of times I have seen my sat nav think I am in a field or a road parralel the dual carrigeway that I am on.  That would be funny, limited to 30 on such an dangerous road.  Lovelly stuff.

Speed is just another unhealthy government obsession.

This whole bollocks about speed has gone on long enough.

Speed has been talked up into a frenzy because its easy to detect, and easy to be seen to be doing something about, and its also easy to create revenue from. They cant do anything about dangerous, careless or plain bad driving - the cause of most accidents.

The way that speed is talked about by the government you would think that if you exceeded 70mph you will instantly kill every child within 5 miles.

Yeah Ive driven a C4 with that on, I can see the use as you say in town so you are capped at 30 but its certainly nice to be able to turn it off. Perhaps something that should be more widely spread.

I coulda done with cruise control this evening driving back to Paris from London, meh.

Even when cars can drive themselves people arnt ready for cars that can drive a person home, I think its for those that would be either REALLY lazy or disabled.

Sat Nav controlled devices would have to become ultra secure and senstive, youd also have to worry about tunnels. Youd have idiots flooring it and then the brakes slamming on after the tunnel when the signal re-negotiated.

Cars that drive themselves will not be commercially available in our life time, Id put money on that.

And how do you collect if you are right? :hunf:    :mutley:

Theres already technology demonstrators out there now, its just a case of time and effort.

And as to who might want one, what about drunks going home? Disqualified drivers? Those who cant legally drive? Those who cant afford their insurance costs? Im sure a lot of those and others would like a car that could drive them.
