car pc

my 1din stereo is on the blink, dont fancy paying £400+ to someone in china for what something to do all the things I want,
so want a car PC

Is it possible to build or find a case that fits into a 1din slot? not bothered about buttons, etc. - just a case big enough - or is it going
to be the 'case' of making my own out of perspex or something....

Get a cheap ipad 1 and whack that into your dash or something. Seeing a lot of people doing that. If you get a 3g version you can do quite a few things with that.

dont have room for a tablet. It did cross my mind - but I really want something that will do more than slate anyhow.
I want blutooth, handsfree, microphone, input for reversing camera, dvb-t tuner, etc.

I see, 3g ipad would cover nearly all of that though. Does have a audio out and mic. IF you jailbreak that an an iphone you can hook up for calls and more as well. There are some interesting implementations in cars out on the web.

Your other stuff, yeah you need a pc but an ipad does offer some great options.

You can build a much better carpc for the cost of an iPad.

I struggled with cases, so I got an old laptop with a dead screen, chucked it in the boot and waited to get enough cash for a single din motorised screen.
I've already got centrafuse waiting for that day.

I got centrafuse as well - going to look at road runner/rider also - i need a screen that comes at & goes down, it cant go up as my drinks trays are directly above the stereo...

anylinks you can share?

im guessing I should get a stereo with a touchscreen & then connect the carpc to one of the video-in connectors.
I dont need a big screen really.

I think you might struggle with that :S

Can you move the drinks holder?

No links really, other than the stuff over at MP3car.

nope, cant move drink holder - its a popout tray - There are screens that pop out & go down,
I use the drinks holder on long drives & long drives would be the only time I'd use the screen really...
I have another 1 din, but thats at the bottom of the console - maybe I should try a cut out piece of cardboard
& see if it is to low.
Alternative I could get sunvisor screens - I always drive with the visors down anyway.
As for the PC - if I cant find a 1din that fits, then under the drivers seat is a pullout draw, I can quite easily fit
one in there.

In Dash Computer
http://www.xenarc.com/product/cp-id8.html

Your going to be better off using something like a pop out LCD in the dash and putting the computer under the seat or in the boot.

The In Dash units are pricy and have their limitations.

By placing the unit elsewhere, cooling is not going to be an issue, so you can use any spec you like, you could also consider an old laptop as well or perhaps a dash mounted netbook.

TBH i would just use a netbook, Aux to Aux or something, would work a treat, and driving round in that beast you must have plenty of dash space.
