Best Way To Insure A Second Car?
on: September 30, 2009, 13:26:46 PM
Im half thinking of buying a 4x4 for over Christmas, and driving to slovakia (should be cheaper than flying with 5 of us).

Whats the cheapest way to insure the car, and best person to own it?

As I own an Impreza, and insure that Fully Comp, and can drive any car 3rd party as long as I dont own it. Which would be fine, as the 4x4 would be cheap as chips.

My girlfriend owns a mini, and insures that Fully Comp, and can drive any car 3rd part as long as she doesnt own it.

My girlfriends sister has a license, doesnt own any car (and never has), and is a named 2nd driver on her sisters insurance.

Or will we have to pay for some form of insurance?? As I will be driving, so would like to use my drive any car 3rd party for free.

Could my girlfriend own the car, but not insure it?? Then me drive it?

I want to do it all legal, but as cheap as possible

We wouldnt be keeping the car for too long, so could get temp insurance, but would rather pay nothing extra.

Dunno, but the thought that comes to mind is to double check to make sure whatever you end up going with covers you for travel in Europe - Could be that these "drive any other car 3rd party" cover only applies to cars in the UK. Id have said the best bet is to phone your current insurance and explain your plan to find out roughly what itd cost, and then go from there. Ive always found my insurance (admiral) to A: be one of the cheapest for me and B: Always be extremely helpful on the phone, for a range of things.

Reason I say about checking is that they all seem to have various clauses and holes in the cover. For me for instance I am fully comp and business class 2. However it turns out that my insurance is only 3rd party on private roads. This has thrown a spanner in the works given that I had intended on driving it on Forestry Comission tracks to get between sites. As these tracks are gated and require a key (which I have) Im only covered if I run someone/someones dog over, whereas really I want it to be covered in case someone breaks into the car or a tree falls on it!

second car has to be owned and insured by someone for you to drive it on your 3rd party insurance.

best way is to buy it, insure with your current insurer who if they are half decent will put the same no claims on it as your current car, then drive there, nejoy, drive back and sell it.

plenty of budget airlines fly to bratislava. Budapest & Vienna are also optional - they are both about a 2hr drive.
Prague cant be that far either.

I cant see your insurance covering you for 3rd party on any insured vehicle & take it abroad.
Deffo phone up on that one.

Will deffo check the 3rd party part out then, thanks :)

My GF has looked at flights, and unless she is being thick (which she normally isnt, but is a woman), she cant seem to find anything cheaper than £300ish.....generally around £320 I think, and seems to be rising every week. Bratislava would be great to go there, and we have been to Budapest before. But then wed need to get public transport from there as well.

Was just thinking of getting a £1500 4x4, go for a drive, come home, sell it. Plus Id charge everyone £250, so would make a bit of money when I sell the car as well  :heehaw: Although a bloke at work says a £1500 Mitsu Shogun (for example) with 70k miles on wouldnt make it  :wtf: I know it would be old, but surely old cars still go well!?

why a 4x4?

Their roads for 99% of the time should be great.

Vienna is less than an hour away sorry - Ryanair fly to bratislava - obviously depending on the dates you want to go... but they have a sale atm for the rest of this year.

A 4x4 as it gets really really snowy! I was there last year, and it was insane! Fun though. Its law to have snow tyres as well, so Id get a 4x4 with them on.

Wed be flying around xmas, so I think they hike all the prices up for the foreigners (like my GF) going home!

I can see it getting bad but a suitable car should be able to handle it. For long distance it usually pays to have 2 drivers so one can rest while the other drives for a bit and take the speed easy.

Mr Roll, we already have our own insurances, so probably isnt worth changing over to Admiral. Thanks for the suggestion though

Serious, what suitable car do you mean? Which ever I bought Id need to buy winter tyres for it over here. Plus it does get quite bad to be honest, especially in the mountains.

If you have quinn insurance, the 3rd party allows you to drive any car that isnt owned by you, and doesnt even have to be insured by anyone else.

Just needs tax & MOT

Probably wouldnt cover overseas though.
