Ive allways fancied an Isuzu Trooper if I ever needed a cheap 4x4, they just look like a beast.

The V6 was a petrol one from the Omega iirc.

The troopers are robust.

Erm, what about a double cab Toyota thing? Or that big Mitsubishi the L300 or Delcia.

Mitsubishi Shogun 2.8TD  around 1995 and before... will be less than 1k...

best thing is, if you add a £25 pump youll be able to run pure veg oil....  so take a few drums with you and youll save more than its worth anyway... making it basically... FREEEEE

:-)

its the top £31 one... but theyre normally "25 on ebay (new)

you dont strictly need one, but the extra pump makes a big difference... install it in the fuel line just after the tank to help lift/push the oil up to the filter - makes starting and running a bit easier :-)

even better if you can get fresh oil...
(not the used stuff which most people use)

where are you going ? (just noticed the bit about the snow)  if its going to be really cold... you could really add a small heat exchanger too... Ive got a spair one you can have if you like... its just going to sit on a shelf forever so might as well be used!#

older indirect injection engines are the best for running on oil.... Ive got a van with one and it runs on oil all the time, hasnt seen a  drop of diesel in months...  got a couple of vans with common rail engines which are a bit trickier, needs a twin tank setup so you start up on diesel then switch over to veg oil once its up and running :-)

also.... its totally legal to run on veg oil!..... as long as you use less than 2500litres a year, you dont have to pay any tax on it, register or do any paperwork etc...
(Ive been dipped twice and it;s never been a problem)

check out this place for more info...
http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/forum/index.php

bit of a heads up tho.... theyre right tight bastards on there... ignore all the posts about air leaks etc.. (pump will sort that out) a lot of them run 20yr old cars... and (obviously) have problems with them... but refuse to spend any money on them.... so it sounds worse than it is... (i.e. months of problems for the sake of two quids worth of fuel hose etc...)

if you do it properly... add a pump (£25 and 30mins work) maybe change the heaterplugs if it needs them (£12 and 20min) then you wont have any problems at all !

Veg oil is the best!

My car actually seems to run smoother when on veg oil especially on the motorway.

I can get upto 450 miles from a tank on veg oil as opposed to 400 miles on normal diesel. Well, I still use 50/50 in the summer.

Thanks a lot knighty! Id defo pay that to get it running nicely. I will have a good read of the links. Ive read that the fuel pumps can blow the seals running on veg oil, as they run at a higher pressure?

Im going across europe to Slovakia, where it gets well in to the minus numbers (-15C)! Which is where I did think Id need a heater. Do these just clip on to the fuel tank or something? Im half thinking it could be bad running on veg oil in that coldness? I might have the heater off you think

I was thinking about a Pajero over Shogun, as the Pajeros seem to be more available. I think they are the same, expect the Pajero is an import.

you just need the right kind of fuel pump... it needs to be a bosh (or bosh copy) and not a Lucas !

older engines are better - because theres indirect injection - the fuel is injected into a red hot little pocked just above the cylinder instead of directly into it... which is better for veg - the extra heat there helps it burn.

-15C is a lot.... youll either have to mix some diesel in when youre in the really cold areas.... or go for a twin tank system... where you add a small diesel tank (plenty of room in a 4x4) which you use to start up, then when the engine is warm you flick a switch and change over to veg oil !

using new oil will save you a load of problems... used oil which is fine at 20C will be full of solid fats at -15C !

the main van i use is a 2.8 common rail with about a million different little sensors on it etc... and it runs perfectly !

either way.... it should save you a good few hundred quid ! (even if you have to stick a (small) trailer on the back for the extra oil!)   - advantage of taking loads of 5gal cans instead of bigger drums etc.. is you can just throw the cans away when theyre empty :-)

Is adding a twin tank system hard? To be honest, I know very little about cars with things like that! I wouldnt mind mixing diesel and veg oil to be honest, if it will cause less problems!

A lot ive been looking at on Autotrader are only 2.5s actually........are these crap compared to the 2.8s?

Thanks a lot for the help :)

L300 Delica would be a good choice, the L400 has the 2.8TD but its prone to fuel pump seal problems.
Very expensive to repair!

2.5L Diesel engine is good though, this is in the L300.

OR!

The 3000 V6 L400 does the same MPG as the diesel.

Cheers :)

The Fronteras and Vitaras arent big enough really.

I did actually look at the Delica, but dont know the different models to be honest. Are they widely available for under £2k? There is only a few on Autotrader. Do they normally come with big chunky tires for snow too?

my advice dont buy a frontera or freelander - i had a freelander for 12 months and it cost me more in "common faults" than it did buying it, ive heard fronteras are as bad.

Pajero / Shogun TDI are bullit proof and the 2.8 always had plenty of boot when i test drove one.

if you can find one get a nissan patrol they dont look pretty but are one of the best 4x4 on the market for the 90s

Just get a subaru legacy GTB twin turbo estate.

Or a Jaguar X-Type 2.5 or 3.0

Much better than any SUV in the snow, as they arent totally overweight, with too-wide tyres that just slide all over the place when you brake etc.
