Car Registration / MOT in two locations? [NI]
on: May 11, 2012, 20:36:36 PM
Can I register my car (V5 docs etc) to any address in the UK?  I seem to recall I can.

I understand that I need to insure it for the address at which it's kept (no problem) but as I move around a lot, registering it to my parent's address will save a periodic ball-ache.

Also, in theory; if I register a car in, say, Manchester, can I get it MOT'd in Northern Ireland (and vice-versa) or is there a requirement to have it MOT'd where your car is registered?

No idea on legality but my motorbike is insured at my place but registered at my parents. Didn't seem to be much hassle at the dealers to do that.

think the only issue you may have is with insurance when they ask if the vehicle is to be kept at the registered address..

any excuse by the thieving nut mugs to add on an extra £50

Insurance are scumbags.

My wife insured her car when she was at Uni at her home address in Sheffield despite studying in Leeds.  She said to the bod on the phone that the car was 50/50 Sheffield/Leeds as she only took it when she needed it.  Guy on the phone said to insure it where it was cheapest.

Her car got stolen in Leeds and they tried to get her on the age old "The car was in Leeds and insured in Sheffield" and conveniently had lost the recording they made of the call....we hadn't...we emailed them a copy.  We also had to explain the principle of a car.  The fact that it had wheels, an engine and moved.  A car doesn't always return to it's own address on an evening.

After months, they finally conceded and paid out.  We rang up when we got the car back and said "There was a CD player in this"...no questions, they knew we had them over a barrel.

You can MOT the car anywhere you like so it doesn't have to be somewhere nearby, I've often had my cars MOT in Sunderland. Also you can still insure your car at any address you like but they want the address its predominantly kept at so it can be priced accordingly and to avoid any obvious fraud. Soopah you should name and shame the insurers as that is unnacceptable, it doesn't matter one jot where your car is stolen from!

Thanks all, what about my driving licence?  I take it that can be anywhere or does it have to be where I actually live?

It has to be where you are contactable.

Again mine is set to my parents place not my rented accommodation.

I rang the dvla a, few years back asking and got told long as it's an actual postal address that you are contactable from it's not a problem.

No different to a po box I guess.

Then the dvla and examiner on my bike test was wrong? illegally so?

What about someone of no fixed abode? if I got turfed out on the streets and had no where to go my driving licence would mean I'm breaking the law?

I got pulled a few years ago after my folks moved, and hadn't updated my licence. Police told me it was an offence too, carries something like £1000 fine.

But that's when your licence is pointing at an address you're no longer contactable at.

If my parents moved (unlikely) I'd have to change it.

What laws govern licencing and state it's illegal?

I'll check opsi.

It's supposed to be your "permanent address". Now, how you define your permanent address is a matter which may be open to debate, if you move around a lot and you parents don't then it makes more logical sense to have it at their place. Of course to expect logical sense of a government department may be a dangerous game, and to not update it is indeed an offense carrying a £1000 fine.

Just returned my licence to DVLA and the slags returned it saying they couldn't change my address to an NI one and I'd have to apply for an NI Driving Licence.  Well, what if I don't want a poxy NI licence, I'm only here for 18 months at the most?  I want a fecking GB one.
